A pop-up, slowdown, or other symptom alone does not prove an infection.
How to tell whether your Mac may have malware
Take an unexpected warning seriously, especially if macOS says an app will damage your computer, cannot verify its developer, or cannot check it for malicious software. Other changes—such as unfamiliar browser extensions, repeated redirects, or an app returning after you delete it—are reasons to investigate, not proof on their own.
Do not respond to an unexpected security prompt by entering passwords, payment details, or other sensitive information. Note the app name and the exact warning text before making changes; those details can help you identify what happened or explain the issue to a support professional.
What macOS does to protect your Mac
Apple describes several built-in layers of protection. The App Store, Gatekeeper, and notarization help prevent untrusted software from launching. Gatekeeper, notarization, and XProtect help block known malware. If malware has run, XProtect can also help remediate it. Apple describes this protection in Apple Platform Security, dated December 19, 2024.

XProtect is built into macOS; it is not a visible Scan button that you can use to check any file on demand. Apple says it uses regularly updated YARA signatures and checks known malicious content when an app is first launched, when an app changes on disk, and when signatures update. When it recognizes known malware, XProtect can block the software, move it to the Trash, and alert you. Apple also says it can remediate infections through automatically delivered security-data updates and continues periodic checks.
These protections are useful, but they are not a guarantee that every threat will be caught. Do not bypass a warning for an app or installer you cannot independently verify. Apple cautions that unsigned or unnotarized software can expose your Mac and personal information to malware.

Remove a suspicious app and check for persistence
- Stop the activity and update macOS. Close the suspicious app or browser tab. Avoid opening the download again, and do not enter credentials into unexpected prompts. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update and install available macOS updates. Record the app name and warning before deleting anything.
- Follow a macOS malware warning. If macOS says an app will damage your computer, cannot verify its developer, or cannot check it for malicious software, choose Move to Bin or Move to Trash when offered. Do not override the warning unless you have independently verified both the developer and the file. Apple says known malicious apps are moved to the Bin and that macOS may offer anonymous sample sharing.
- Uninstall the app. If the developer provides an uninstaller, use it. Otherwise, quit the app, move it from Applications to the Bin or Trash, and empty the Bin or Trash. Remove only related files you can identify with confidence; do not delete unfamiliar system files or run “cleaner” scripts from untrusted sources.
- Check what launches when you sign in. Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. Remove unfamiliar or recently added Open at Login items. Restart the Mac. If a startup problem returns, Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends removing login items and adding known ones back one at a time to isolate the cause.
- Review browser extensions and profiles. In each browser you use, disable and remove extensions you did not install or no longer trust. If Safari settings are blocked or the Mac continues to behave abnormally, Apple recommends updating macOS, starting in safe mode, addressing the extension, and then restarting normally.
If symptoms return after removing the visible app, look for a related login item or browser extension rather than repeatedly deleting the app alone. A managed Mac may restrict these changes; contact your employer’s or school’s IT administrator instead of trying to bypass device controls.
When to run a second-opinion malware scan
If suspicious behavior continues after the cleanup, an on-demand scan from a reputable security vendor can provide another check. Malwarebytes’ Mac guidance documents threat and custom scans, scan reports, quarantine management, and optional real-time and web protection.

- Download the software only from the vendor’s official source and install updates before scanning.
- Run a threat scan; use a custom scan if you need to examine selected locations.
- Review the detections and report. Quarantine items the software identifies rather than manually deleting files you cannot identify.
- Restart if prompted, then observe whether the original symptoms return.
A third-party scanner is optional, not a substitute for macOS updates or careful handling of warnings. Do not assume that any scanner will detect every threat, and do not install multiple unfamiliar security or cleanup apps in an attempt to fix the Mac.
Protect accounts if you may have shared credentials
If you entered a password while the Mac may have been compromised, change it from a device you trust to be clean. Enable multifactor authentication where available and review recent account sessions for activity you do not recognize. Prioritize email, Apple Account, financial, and work accounts if their credentials may have been exposed.

When to get help
- The Mac will not start or you cannot safely complete the cleanup.
- Suspicious behavior continues after removing the app, checking login items and extensions, updating macOS, and running a second-opinion scan.
- The Mac belongs to an employer or school, or configuration restrictions prevent you from making changes.
- You suspect that passwords, financial information, or other sensitive data were stolen.
Contact Apple Support or a qualified technician for a personal Mac. For an employer- or school-managed Mac, contact the organization’s IT team. If you suspect credential theft, secure the affected accounts from a known-clean device as well as addressing the Mac itself.
Do you need antivirus software on a Mac?
macOS already has built-in protections, including Gatekeeper and XProtect, so a separate antivirus app is not required to use those protections. A reputable third-party scanner can be an optional second opinion when symptoms remain or when you want additional security features. Choose one from its official source and understand what it scans and what protections it adds; do not rely on an advertised detection percentage unless it comes from a relevant, independent test.
