To check for an NVIDIA SHIELD TV system update, open Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade. From there, you can check manually, respond to an update notification, or enable Auto-upgrade.
Check for and install an update manually
- From the SHIELD TV home screen, open Settings.
- Select Device Preferences > About > System upgrade.
- Follow the on-screen prompt if an update is available.
This is the manual update route in NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV User Guide. Menu wording can differ by software version; if you do not see the exact labels, look in the device’s About or System upgrade settings.
Install an update from a notification
If an update notification appears on the home screen, select Details. NVIDIA says SHIELD TV will then download and apply the update.
Set SHIELD TV to upgrade automatically
Open Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade and turn on Auto-upgrade. NVIDIA says you can specify a time for SHIELD TV to apply the upgrade; its guide does not promise a particular update release date or rollout schedule.

If a system update fails
NVIDIA’s SHIELD troubleshooting guide identifies a corrupted downloaded image as one possible cause of a failed system upgrade. It documents deleting local update data in the OTA folder, rebooting the device, and retrying the download and installation. The guide is older, so treat this as a documented troubleshooting option rather than a guaranteed fix. If the update still fails, contact NVIDIA support.
System updates and accessory updates are different
A SHIELD TV system update is separate from software updates for a remote or controller. NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance notes that an accessory may need sufficient charge to receive its own software update. Charge the remote or controller if you are troubleshooting an accessory update.

Which update method should you use?
- Manual check: Use System upgrade when you want to check for an update yourself and respond to its prompt.
- Notification: Select Details when SHIELD TV displays an update notification.
- Auto-upgrade: Enable this option if you want SHIELD TV to handle upgrades automatically and choose when it applies them.
NVIDIA describes system upgrades as being pushed directly to SHIELD TV, but its user guide does not state a release schedule. It also does not establish the current latest software version, so a version number or release date cannot be confirmed here.
