On most Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets, open Settings > Software update > Download and install, then follow the on-screen prompts if an update is offered. The exact menu names and update timing vary by model, software version, carrier, and region, so a manual check does not guarantee a new update will appear.
Check for an update in Galaxy Settings
- Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network. Some carriers require Wi-Fi to check for or install updates.
- Open Settings, then tap Software update. If that option is not there, look for System updates; Samsung says menu labels and screens can differ by model and software version.
- Tap Download and install. Depending on the device or carrier, the check button may instead say Check for updates, Check for system updates, or Check for software updates.
- If an update is offered, download it and follow the prompts to install. The device may restart, and some software versions may require you to repeat the check or installation process.
Samsung’s US support documentation cautions that “Available screens and settings may vary by wireless service provider, software version, and model.” Samsung’s Galaxy update guide describes the standard phone and tablet update route.
Check the dedicated security-update menu if available
Some Galaxy devices have a separate security-update check. Open Settings > Security and privacy > Updates > Security update, then tap Check for updates. This menu is not available on every device, so use the Software update route if you cannot find it.
Samsung Caribbean’s regional guidance recommends having at least 20% battery before updating. Treat that as advice from that regional support page, not a universal battery requirement for every Galaxy device.

Install with Smart Switch on a computer
If the phone’s update route is unavailable or continues to fail, Samsung Smart Switch for Windows or Mac may offer an update when one is available. You need a computer and a USB connection to the Galaxy device.
- Install and open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy phone or tablet to the computer with a USB cable.
- If Smart Switch offers Update, select it and follow the prompts.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the device until the update finishes. The device will restart.
If Smart Switch cannot connect, check that the phone’s USB mode is set to file transfer, try another USB port or cable, restart or update the computer, or reinstall Smart Switch. Samsung recommends using the cable supplied with the device; replacing it is not automatically necessary.

Confirm the installed software details
To view software-version information, open Settings > About phone or About tablet > Software information. Update history or release notes may also be available from the Software update menu or the carrier’s support page.
Why Galaxy may say its software is up to date
That message means no update is being offered to your particular device at the time you checked. It does not mean every Galaxy model shares the same release date or update schedule. Samsung says availability and timing depend on the model, software version, provider, and region; newly released updates may also arrive in waves.

Its current security page also records Samsung’s statement that, as of January 2024, security support for Galaxy devices was being extended by up to seven years. “Up to” does not guarantee seven years of updates for every model. - Check the exact model and carrier release information. Compare against your device’s model and carrier, not another Galaxy phone. Carrier support pages may publish update histories and notes.
- Try Wi-Fi and check again later. Some carriers require Wi-Fi, and rollout in waves can mean a newly announced update has not reached your device yet.
- Check available storage. If storage is insufficient, Samsung says the device reports that space must be freed. An interrupted download may be resumable from the notification.
- Try Smart Switch. A computer update may work when the on-device route does not.
- Back up before recovery steps. Samsung warns that factory reset or emergency recovery can erase data, so do not treat a reset as an early routine fix. If the device will not boot normally after a failed update, Samsung says service may be required to reflash it.
