An unexplained jump in your water bill, a toilet that refills on its own, or a meter that keeps moving when everything is off can point to a household leak. Start with visible checks, then use a no-use meter test and a toilet dye test to narrow down the cause. Small, accessible fixture drips may be manageable; persistent or concealed leaks are best handled by a qualified plumber.
How to check whether your home has a leak
1. Compare your water use
Compare your latest bill with the same period last year, rather than relying only on the previous billing cycle. Seasonal use, irrigation, visitors, and changes in household size can all affect the total. The U.S. EPA says a family of four with no outdoor winter water use may have a serious leak if winter consumption exceeds 12,000 gallons per month; treat that figure as a warning clue, not a universal cutoff. See the EPA’s Home Maintenance guidance.
2. Look and listen around fixtures
Check faucets and showerheads for drips, and look under sinks for puddles, water marks, or damp pipe connections. Listen for water running when fixtures and appliances are off. Visible clues can help identify a local problem, but a dry-looking room does not rule out a hidden leak.
3. Use the water meter as a whole-home screen
- Turn off faucets and other fixtures, and make sure appliances and irrigation are not using water during the test.
- Find the water meter, commonly near the curb or indoors in colder climates, and record its reading.
- Wait about two hours without using water, then read the meter again.
- If the reading changes, water has likely been flowing somewhere in the system. The test can indicate a leak or other water use, but it cannot locate the source.
This screening procedure is described by EPA WaterSense. A running appliance or irrigation system can confound the result, so repeat the test when you can account for all water use.

4. Check for a silent toilet leak
- Put a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet into the toilet tank.
- Wait about 10 minutes without flushing.
- Check the bowl. If colored water has appeared there, water is leaking from the tank into the bowl.
- Flush after the test to avoid staining.
A worn flapper is a common cause, and replacing it may resolve the leak. Choose a flapper that fits the toilet model; EPA recommends checking flappers periodically and replacing them at least every five years. For toilet problems that need further investigation, EPA advises seeking plumbing help. Details are in its toilet leak guidance.
Which leaks can you fix yourself?
EPA says a dripping faucet or leaky showerhead can often be repaired with a wrench or plumbing thread-seal tape. Follow the fixture maker’s directions, and shut off the local water supply if appropriate. Work only on a repair that is visible, accessible, and within your comfort and skill level.

- Reasonable small repair: a straightforward faucet or showerhead drip, or a toilet flapper you can identify and replace with a compatible part.
- Call a plumber: a recurring leak, a leak behind a wall or under a floor, wet pipe connections you cannot safely repair, or a toilet problem that persists or requires diagnosis.
A surface patch is not a reliable substitute for diagnosing a recurring or concealed leak. EPA’s Fix a Leak Week guidance also describes simple fixture repairs and recommends professional help when needed.
Should you install a leak monitor?
Leak-monitoring devices use different approaches, so choose based on what you want to detect. EPA distinguishes moisture sensors, which alert to dampness at a particular location, from flow monitors, which watch for unusual water-use patterns across the plumbing. Some systems can operate a shutoff valve, depending on the device and its compatibility with the home’s plumbing.

| Device type | What it detects | Installation and shutoff |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture sensor | Dampness at the sensor’s location | Placement matters; automatic shutoff is system-dependent. |
| Flow monitor | Unusual water-use patterns in the plumbing | May require installation on the plumbing; some systems can close a compatible shutoff valve. |
Before choosing a system, compare sensor placement, installation requirements, alert method, shutoff compatibility, and maintenance. EPA recommends checking installed systems annually. Its resources include Leak Detection and Flow Monitoring Devices and a Know Your Flow and Curb Water Waste guide.

In a 2024 release, the EPA estimated that leaks waste nearly 10,000 gallons per year in the average household and could add as much as 10% to a water bill. These are EPA estimates, not a prediction for an individual home. Then-Acting Assistant Administrator for Water Radhika Fox said: “The benefits of Fix a Leak Week are simple—with very little time and investment, Americans can save money on home utility bills while supporting local water resources.”
