For a U.S. address, start with FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center to look up the effective flood map and related products. Treat the result as a guide to mapped hazard—not proof that a place outside a high-risk zone cannot flood. Pair the map check with local alerts and a household plan for where to go, how to get there, and what to take.

Look up your address on FEMA’s official map

  1. Open FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center and search for your address. The center is FEMA’s official online source for flood-hazard mapping products created under the National Flood Insurance Program. Its interface may change, so follow the current search options rather than relying on an old button-by-button guide. FEMA’s flood-map overview explains the role of the maps.
  2. Review the effective Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) result for the location. Note the map panel and effective-date details shown, along with the flood zone information. FEMA says the Map Service Center provides official maps, FIRM panels, Flood Insurance Study reports, Letters of Map Change, and National Flood Hazard Layer data. See the Map Service Center product factsheet.
  3. If the result is unclear, inspect other available products for the community, including preliminary or pending products where available. For help interpreting a map or proposed change, contact FEMA’s Mapping and Insurance eXchange or your local floodplain administrator. FEMA’s homeowner flood-risk guidance describes address lookup and flood-zone information.

Understand what a map result does—and does not—tell you

A flood map is a reference to mapped hazard, not a forecast of whether or when a particular property will flood. Being outside a mapped high-risk area does not mean there is no risk: FEMA says there is no “no-risk zone,” and Ready.gov warns that flooding does not follow map lines. Rainfall, snowmelt, coastal storms, storm surge, and water-system overflows can cause flooding, which may develop slowly or quickly. Ready.gov’s current flood guidance recommends checking maps while remaining prepared beyond their boundaries.

Map products can have effective dates and revisions, so pay attention to which version applies to the address. The FEMA Flood Hazard Products and Tools page describes the National Flood Hazard Layer and the National Risk Index. These serve different purposes: the National Risk Index adds community-level context, while an address search focuses on mapped hazard. Neither replaces current local warnings or orders.

Use local information for current conditions

Sign up for your community’s warning system before severe weather threatens, and learn where local emergency management posts evacuation routes, shelter information, and instructions. Follow official directions during an event; a map cannot tell you which road is safe right now. Ready.gov’s FEMA App information says the app provides preparedness information, National Weather Service alerts for up to five locations, and shelter-finding support; that page was last updated October 29, 2024. Check current local channels as well.

Build a household evacuation plan

Choose a destination and routes

  • Identify a safe destination on higher ground and learn local evacuation routes. Practice the route in advance.
  • Choose a backup route because floodwater can make roads impassable. Use official local instructions to determine which route and destination are appropriate during an actual emergency.

Plan for everyone in the household

  • Include children, people with disabilities or medical needs, and pets. Decide who will help each person and how pets will travel.
  • Agree on how to communicate and where to reunite if separated. FEMA recommends a communications plan; texts or messages may work when calls do not.

Set up alerts and know when to act

  • Enroll in local emergency alerts and monitor official weather and emergency-management information. Learn the distinction between flood watches and warnings through local or official guidance.
  • Follow evacuation orders promptly. Do not wait to see how high the water gets.

Prepare items to take

  • Keep medications and essential supplies, phone chargers and extra batteries, and important documents ready to take. Store documents in a waterproof container; keep password-protected digital copies where appropriate.
  • Include food, medication, carriers, and other necessities for pets based on their needs.

Plan for sheltering as well as evacuation

Local conditions and official instructions determine whether leaving or sheltering is safer. If trapped indoors by rising water, move to the highest level, but do not enter a closed attic where water could trap you. Follow local authorities’ directions.

Stay out of floodwater and wait for the all-clear

Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwater. Turn around at barricades, and avoid bridges over fast-moving water. Do not return to an evacuated area until officials say it is safe. Ready.gov’s flood guidance and FEMA’s January 2025 flood information sheet cover evacuation preparation and flood safety.
