Where to see worktree storage in VS Code
In VS Code 1.141 Stable, released October 7, 2026, open the Command Palette and run Chat: Open Worktree Cleanup. The editor lists eligible inactive session worktrees, shows each estimated size, and provides controls to choose which ones to remove. Microsoft describes this as a way to reclaim disk space from inactive agent-session worktrees, on demand or automatically. VS Code 1.141 release notes
Choose which inactive sessions to review
Set the inactivity threshold to 7, 15, 30, 60, or 90 days. The selected period determines which sessions are considered for cleanup; it does not mean every session older than that period will appear.
VS Code excludes active, running, waiting-for-input, pinned, done, archived, untitled, and errored sessions, as well as sessions that have not reached the selected inactivity period. Worktrees VS Code cannot size are also excluded. Review the editor’s list and estimated sizes rather than treating the threshold as a command to delete every old session. What cleanup removes—and what it preserves
When you confirm cleanup, VS Code marks each selected session as done and schedules its worktree for removal. It first attempts to commit uncommitted changes to the session branch. If it cannot preserve changes or remove a worktree, that worktree remains in place.
Cleanup does not erase the session’s branch history. Restoring a session recreates its worktree. These safeguards make the workflow different from permanently deleting a session and all its history, but you should still review the selected worktrees before confirming. Optional prompts when worktrees take up space
VS Code can suggest cleanup if you enable the experimental setting chat.agentSessions.sessionStorageCleanupSuggestion.enabled. It is off by default. With it enabled, a suggestion may appear when inactive worktrees use at least 5 GiB or when 20 worktrees are eligible. Those are suggestion triggers, not estimates of typical usage or promised disk savings. Manage agent sessions in VS Code AI settings reference
Automatic cleanup is a separate preview option
Automatic cleanup for merged sessions is in preview, and its settings are disabled by default. It uses two separate controls: how many inactive days must pass before an eligible session is marked done, and how long to wait before deleting sessions already marked done.
