Windows 11 does not include a Settings page that shows exact charging wattage in watts. The Battery icon can indicate whether the PC is charging slowly or discharging while connected, but it does not show a number such as 45 W or 65 W.

For charger-side power, use a USB-C power meter between the charger and PC. For battery-side charging power, a Windows application can read the battery API value ChargeRateInMilliwatts. These are different measurements and are not necessarily equal.

What Windows 11 can and cannot show

Stock Windows 11 provides a charging-status indication, not a built-in wattage meter. To check it:

  1. Connect the charger to the PC.
  2. Hover over or select the Battery icon on the taskbar.
  3. Read the status message.

Windows may report that the PC is charging slowly or discharging while plugged in. This indicates insufficient or problematic charging; it does not reveal the exact power level.

Do not follow instructions that say to open Settings and read charging watts from a standard Windows 11 battery page. Microsoft does not document such a wattage field.

Method 1: Measure charger wattage with a USB-C power meter

If you need to know how much power is entering the PC through USB-C, the most direct method is a USB-C power meter. It sits between the charger and computer and normally displays voltage, current, and calculated power.

  1. Use a meter that supports the USB-C Power Delivery levels used by your charger and PC.
  2. Disconnect the charging cable from the PC.
  3. Connect the charger to the meter.
  4. Connect the meter to the PC using the existing charging cable or a cable rated for the required power.
  5. Read the meter’s wattage display after charging negotiation has completed.

The meter’s result is charger-side power at that point in time. It can change as the battery approaches full charge, the PC wakes or sleeps, the display load changes, or the charger and PC renegotiate their USB Power Delivery profile.

Why a USB-C connector does not tell you the wattage

USB-C describes the connector and interface, not one fixed charging limit. Microsoft notes that basic USB-C can support up to 5 V at 3 A, or 15 W, while USB Power Delivery can support higher levels. For example:

Voltage Current Power
5 V 3 A 15 W
12 V 3 A 36 W

The charger, cable, PC, and charging port must all support the required level. A USB-C plug by itself does not establish the negotiated wattage.

Method 2: Read battery-side charging power through Windows

Windows exposes a battery API value called ChargeRateInMilliwatts. It reports the rate at which the battery is charging in milliwatts. Divide the value by 1,000 to convert it to watts: charging watts = ChargeRateInMilliwatts ÷ 1,000.

For example, a reported value of 42000 means approximately 42 W of battery-side charging power. A negative value means the battery is discharging.

Microsoft’s example reads the value as report.ChargeRateInMilliwatts. This is available to Windows applications; it is not a built-in Settings readout or a documented powercfg command that prints charger wattage.

  • OVERLOAD DETECTION: Detect voltage and current overload, ensuring the safety and protection of your devices and power sources during testing
  • HIGH-RESOLUTION LCD: The hi-resolution LCD provides clear visibility of measurements, even in environments with low ambient lighting, ensuring easy reading of data

Because this is the battery’s charging rate, it is not necessarily the same as power coming from the wall. Conversion losses, the PC’s own power use, charging circuitry, and system activity can make charger-side input higher than the battery-side rate. Devices with multiple battery controllers may expose an aggregate report or reports for individual batteries.

Method 3: Generate a Windows battery report

The built-in battery report is useful for battery capacity, usage history, and battery-usage characteristics. It is not a charger-wattage report and does not provide a documented USB-C Power Delivery negotiation reading.

To generate it:

  1. Open Command Prompt. Administrator access is normally not required for the standard report.
  2. Run powercfg /batteryreport.
  3. Read the message in Command Prompt, which gives the location of the generated HTML file.
  4. Open that HTML file in a browser and review the battery capacity and usage sections.

Microsoft also documents optional output-file and reporting-period parameters for the command. Neither option adds charging wattage to the report. Treat claims that powercfg /batteryreport directly shows charger watts as incorrect or overstated.

Check whether Windows detects a charging problem

Windows 11 can show USB-C notifications that explain why charging is slow or unavailable. To control these notifications:

What to check when the wattage is too low

If a USB-C meter shows less power than expected, or Windows reports slow charging, check the complete charging path rather than just the adapter label.

  1. Confirm the charger rating. A phone charger may provide power but not enough for a laptop. Compare its supported output with the PC manufacturer’s required adapter wattage.
  2. Use the PC’s charging port. Some USB-C ports transfer data or video but do not accept power. If the computer has more than one USB-C port, check its manual or port markings.
  3. Replace the cable. The cable must support the required current and USB Power Delivery level. A cable that works for a phone may not support the laptop’s maximum charging rate.
  4. Remove the dock or hub. Connect the charger directly to the PC. An external hub or dock can limit available power or may require its own correctly connected power adapter.
  5. Inspect the port carefully. Dirt or dust can prevent the USB-C plug from seating properly. Do not force the connector or insert metal objects into the port.
  6. Test while reducing system load. A demanding game or processor workload can consume much of the incoming power. The battery may charge slowly or continue discharging even though the adapter is connected.
  7. Check the status again after a short delay. Charging power is dynamic, particularly near full charge, so one instantaneous reading is not a guaranteed maximum.

What does ChargeRateInMilliwatts mean?

It is the battery’s charging rate in milliwatts. Divide it by 1,000 to convert it to watts. It is battery-side power, so it may differ from the wattage entering the PC from the charger.

Why does my laptop discharge while plugged in?

The charger may be incompatible or underpowered, the cable may not support the required power, the cable may be connected to a non-charging port, or a hub or dock may be limiting power. Heavy PC use can also consume more power than the charger supplies.

Is USB-C limited to 15 W?

No. Basic USB-C can support up to 5 V at 3 A, or 15 W, but USB Power Delivery supports higher power levels when the charger, cable, PC, and port all support them.

The Bottom Line

There is no built-in Windows 11 wattage readout in Settings. Use the Battery icon and USB-C notifications to identify charging problems, powercfg /batteryreport for battery history, a USB-C power meter for charger-side wattage, or a Windows application using ChargeRateInMilliwatts for battery-side charging power.
