You can check and install a Samsung refrigerator update through SmartThings on compatible models, or through the refrigerator’s Family Hub screen when that option is available. Menus and update eligibility vary by model, software version, and country, so start with the complete model code and its Samsung support page or manual rather than assuming every Samsung refrigerator can update through the app.
Before you update: identify your model and its supported route
Find the refrigerator’s complete model code on its appliance label or in its Samsung registration or support record. On Samsung’s US refrigerator support page, search by model code or product name to find model-specific manuals, downloads, firmware, and software. If you are outside the United States, use Samsung’s support site for your country; regional instructions and available updates can differ.
Samsung documents SmartThings updates for compatible smart refrigerators, not for every refrigerator. Check your model’s support information before relying on an app update. For a supported model, set up the refrigerator in SmartThings using Devices > Add, then follow the app prompts to scan a QR code or discover a nearby device. Some models show “AP” during Wi-Fi pairing; button sequences vary, so follow your refrigerator’s manual. Samsung recommends that the refrigerator and phone or tablet use the same Wi-Fi network. Review the consent information shown in the app. If you agree, tap Update.

Watch the app’s progress bar and follow its on-screen prompts until the update finishes. The published instructions do not specify a duration, so rely on the app’s status rather than an estimated wait time.

Confirm which software version is installed
After the update completes, select the refrigerator in SmartThings, open its menu, and choose Information > Software information. Check the firmware version displayed there. This is Samsung UK’s documented verification path; if your app uses different labels, consult the instructions for your model.
Update from the Family Hub refrigerator screen
Some Family Hub refrigerators also show update information on the appliance itself. Samsung India’s instructions say to connect the refrigerator to wireless internet, then open Settings > About device and select Update if one is offered. That page was last updated October 29, 2020, so treat the path as model- and software-specific; use your current manual if the menus differ. Samsung US also describes checking Family Hub software updates through SmartThings. Its Family Hub and SmartThings guide provides app setup context, while Samsung India’s Family Hub update instructions give the panel route.

If there is no update option or an error appears

Check model eligibility: Revisit the exact model’s Samsung support page and manual. An absent app control does not establish that the refrigerator is faulty or that a firmware update is available.

Check connectivity: If the route requires internet access, confirm the refrigerator is online and follow the model-specific network instructions.

Do not unplug as a routine update step: Samsung Support’s error-code guidance says, “Unless directed, do not unplug the refrigerator.” Do not add a generic power cycle to the update procedure.
