Check sessions in the account provider’s own security dashboard, then use its sign-out control for anything you do not recognize. Google lets you review and revoke individual device sessions; a personal Microsoft account also offers a sign-out-everywhere option, which can take up to 24 hours and does not include Xbox consoles. If you suspect someone accessed your account, revoke access and secure the account by changing its password and reviewing security and recovery settings.

Before you act: an unfamiliar entry is a clue, not proof

Device names, locations, and activity times can be confusing. Google may list several sessions for one device, including separate browser, app, or service sessions. Signing in through a new browser, granting an app access, re-entering a password, or using private browsing can create another session. Google’s displayed time is the last communication with Google and may reflect background syncing rather than someone actively using the device. Its location may be nearby rather than exact. Travel, a public computer, a new device, or a recent factory reset can also explain an entry you do not recognize. Google explains how to review devices with account access.

Microsoft’s Recent activity page also may not show every account event; it focuses on significant security-related activity. Review the details—such as location, IP address, device or operating system, and browser or app—before deciding what to do. A location or timestamp alone does not establish that an account was compromised. Microsoft describes its Recent activity page.

Check and sign out of a Google device or session

  1. Open your Google Account security settings.
  2. Under Your devices, select Manage all devices.
  3. Open a device or session to inspect its details.
  4. Select Sign out for a session you do not recognize or no longer own.

Google defines a session as a period when you are signed in from a browser, app, or service on a device. If you see multiple sessions with the same device name and cannot tell which are yours, Google advises signing out of all sessions with that name. Review the context before acting: a recently communicating session is not necessarily an active intruder.

Review recent sign-ins and sign out everywhere on a personal Microsoft account

  1. Sign in directly to your Microsoft account security dashboard; do not follow a link in an unexpected security email.
  2. Select Review activity to open Recent activity. The page covers the last 30 days. Expand an entry to inspect its details.
  3. For an entry in Unusual activity that is not yours or that you are unsure about, select This wasn’t me. For a suspicious entry in the ordinary Recent activity section, select Secure your account.
  4. To revoke sessions more broadly, open Advanced security options, scroll to Sign out everywhere, and select Sign out.

Microsoft says signing out everywhere may take up to 24 hours to reach browsers, apps, and other places where the account is used. It does not sign out an Xbox console. These consumer-account instructions do not necessarily apply to work or school accounts: organizations may use a separate My Sign-ins or My Account portal and control access policies. For a managed account, use your organization’s sign-in portal or contact its administrator. Microsoft’s sign-out-everywhere instructions explain the scope and delay; see also its sign-in activity guidance for managed identities.

If you think someone accessed your account

  1. Use the provider’s dashboard to report suspicious activity or sign out the affected session. For a Google security alert, inspect the device, time, and location through your account controls. Google says reporting an unfamiliar sign-in through the notification signs the account out on other devices.
  2. Change the account password, especially if you did not initiate the sign-in.
  3. Review security and recovery settings, along with recent security activity, and remove anything you do not recognize.

Do not rely on an alert email’s links to reach these controls. Google warns that attackers can imitate security alerts, and Microsoft recommends signing in directly to check activity. Google’s guidance for responding to suspicious account activity explains how to review an alert and secure the account.

Optional: strengthen sign-in after securing the account

Google recommends stronger second-step verification, including security keys. A compatible key can strengthen future sign-ins, but it does not identify suspicious sessions, revoke access, or replace changing a password that may have been compromised. Review and secure the account first. Google’s security-key guidance covers this optional sign-in protection.
