Before reinstalling or powering on an RTX 4090 that has been dropped or struck, unplug the PC and inspect the card, its PCIe contacts, and its power connection. Do not energize it if the PCB or connector is cracked, bent, burned, melted, or otherwise visibly damaged. A clean-looking card—or one that boots—cannot prove that hidden impact damage is absent.
Make the PC safe before inspecting the card
- Shut down the computer, switch off the power supply, and unplug the PC from the wall. Do not handle the card while the system is connected to mains power. If you notice smoke, a burning smell, melted plastic, or exposed conductors, leave it unplugged.
- Use care to limit static risk. NVIDIA’s installation guidance says: “When handling your graphics card, hold it by the edges and avoid touching any circuitry or the PCIe connector.” NVIDIA graphics-card handling guidance.
- If you are not comfortable removing or inspecting the card, do not force the job. Ask a qualified technician or the card maker’s service channel to assess it.
Inspect the RTX 4090 for visible impact damage
Look over the card in good light without removing its cooler or taking it apart. The exact design varies by manufacturer; NVIDIA’s reference RTX 4090 is 304 mm long, 137 mm wide, and three slots (61 mm) thick, while partner cards can differ. Identify the exact model before assessing fit, parts, or service options. NVIDIA RTX 4090 specifications.
PCB, backplate, and cooler
- Check for a cracked, split, or visibly bowed PCB, a bent or deformed backplate, a shifted shroud, or parts that appear loose.
- Do not power the card if its structure is visibly cracked or bent. MSI lists a deformed backplate and cracked PCB as damage examples; ASUS notes that PCB breaks affecting internal traces are structural damage from external force. These examples are not a definitive self-diagnosis or warranty decision: the manufacturers’ service centers make the actual assessment. - Avoid removing the cooler to look for hidden damage unless the manufacturer or a qualified technician directs you. Disassembly can cause further damage or complicate support.
Fans
Look for broken blades, a visibly tilted fan, or debris obstructing a fan. Do not force a fan to turn. Broken fan blades are among MSI’s examples of mechanical damage, but only a service assessment can determine the card’s condition.
PCIe edge connector
Inspect the gold contacts and the substrate around them for cracks, missing or deeply scratched plating, bent areas, or exposed underlying material. ASUS identifies damaged gold plating on the gold fingers—including exposed material—as structural damage from external force. Do not insert a card with visibly damaged contacts into the motherboard. Power socket, adapter, and cable
Check the card’s power socket, adapter plug, and cable for cracks, distortion, looseness, exposed wire, discoloration, melted plastic, or a cable pulled at an angle. NVIDIA specifies 3 PCIe 8-pin cables with the in-box adapter, or a 450 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable, for its reference RTX 4090; confirm the requirements for your specific partner card. In a November 18, 2022 update, NVIDIA said its findings suggested that a common connector issue was a plug that was not fully seated. That statement concerns connector seating; it does not establish that impact caused a problem with your card. NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 connector update.

Decide whether to reinstall it or seek service
If you find a crack, bent structure, damaged contacts, a damaged power connection, burning, or melting, leave the card unpowered and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service. Do not use a successful boot, display output, or benchmark as proof that it is safe: the official guidance cited here does not provide a validated post-impact pass/fail test for hidden damage.
If there is no visible damage and the impact seemed minor, a cautious reinstallation may be reasonable only if you are comfortable working inside a PC. Stop rather than forcing the card if it does not seat normally. If you do power it and notice new artifacts, a black screen, crashes, fan rubbing, an unusual electrical smell, or other new symptoms, shut down and seek professional assessment instead of repeatedly power cycling. These checks can reveal a problem; they cannot certify that the card survived the impact internally.

Contact the right support provider
For a GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition, NVIDIA says to contact NVIDIA support; for a partner-made GeForce card, contact the add-in-board partner. Identify the exact model and have the seller, purchase date, and region details available. NVIDIA’s warranty terms list damage related to misuse or negligence among exclusions, while partner terms and repair options vary by manufacturer and region.
