Before paying for a used PS5 Pro, test it in person if possible: inspect the exterior, connect it to a display and the internet, verify PlayStation service access, and check every item promised in the listing. Ask the seller to deactivate the console and reset it for transfer before you take it home. Treat any feature you cannot test as unknown—not as a pass.
Before you meet the seller
- Check the seller’s reputation and feedback. Ask for a short video of the actual console powering on and reaching the home screen, showing a stable picture, connecting online if relevant, and testing its ports, buttons, and disc drive if it has one. PlayStation’s used-product buying guide recommends asking for video proof, but an in-person check can reveal problems that a video may miss.
- Ask for a written list of everything included and compare it with the listing. There is no universal used-bundle inventory established by PlayStation’s guide; what matters is whether the seller supplies what they advertised.
- Ask whether the console can access PlayStation services and whether the seller will deactivate it and remove their access before handover.
Inspect the console and its identity markings
Check all external surfaces and covers for cracks, dents, impact marks, liquid residue, unusual gaps, and heavy dust. Look for signs of overheating or damage. PlayStation notes that some physical issues are harder to assess by video.
Check that the serial number is present and legible, and look for signs that warranty seals have been broken. PlayStation flags removed serial numbers and broken seals as inspection concerns. A serial number can also help identify the console or establish ownership later. Do not open or disassemble the console for a casual pre-purchase check; if it appears to need internal service, consider it a repair risk or walk away.
Test power, picture, sound, controls, and the disc drive
- Connect the PS5 Pro to a display and power it on. Confirm that the picture is stable, sound works, and the console responds to ordinary menu navigation. Watch for flickering, unexpected shutdowns, repeated error messages, or abnormal heat or noise.
- Test the console buttons and front and rear ports as applicable. Pair and operate the controller included in the deal, and make sure it matches the listing. PlayStation’s PS5 Pro troubleshooting guide covers overheating, flickering, audio, disc, and TV-connection issues; these symptoms are useful to notice, but checking them is not a complete diagnostic test.
- If the console includes a disc drive, test it with a known-good game or supported video disc and confirm the console recognizes and loads it. If it fails, try another game, Blu-ray, or DVD. Burned discs and audio CDs are not valid tests: PlayStation says PS5 consoles cannot play them. See PlayStation’s disc-drive guidance.
Verify PlayStation service access and account transfer
With the seller present, connect the console to the internet and check that it can access PlayStation services. A console reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from those services, according to PlayStation’s used-product buying guide. An internet connection alone is not enough to establish service access.

Ask the seller to deactivate the console and make sure they no longer have access to it. PlayStation’s guide says: “If you’re buying a console, make sure that the seller has deactivated it and no longer has access to it.” Do not rely on continued access to the seller’s profile; the purchase should transfer the console, not the seller’s account. If the seller refuses a live service check or deactivation, treat that as unresolved risk rather than assuming the console is clear.
Agree on the reset before handover
Ask the seller to back up anything they want to keep, then reset the console for transfer before you take possession. PlayStation says a reset deletes user and game data and cannot be undone. “Restore Default Settings” is different: it changes settings without deleting user or game data. Check the PS5 reset and default-settings guidance so the seller does not mistake one operation for the other.

Match the accessories to the listing
Use the seller’s specific listing as the checklist; these are examples of items to verify, not a claim that every regional package includes them.
- Console and controller(s)
- Stand or base, if promised
- Power lead, HDMI cable, and USB charging or data cable, if promised
- Retail packaging and any separately advertised extras
Physically tick off each promised item. Check that the controller charges and pairs, cables fit securely, and the stand or other accessories are present and undamaged. You can photograph the serial number and included items for your records, but avoid unnecessarily capturing personal account information.

Check warranty, returns, and purchase proof
Warranty coverage depends on the region and seller. PlayStation’s US buying guidance says third-party used products may not be covered by warranty, while its certified refurbished products do include warranty. The cited US/Canada PS5 limited warranty states a one-year warranty for the original purchaser and excludes products with serial numbers that have been altered, defaced, or removed. Those terms do not establish coverage for every location or second-hand buyer.
If warranty matters, ask for proof of the original purchase and check local terms, whether coverage transfers, and the seller’s return window before paying. An inspection can identify issues present at the time, but it cannot guarantee the console will not fail later; PlayStation describes its buying guidance as non-comprehensive. Exact accessories, warranty terms, return rights, and service availability depend on the offer and region.
