If possible, run Apple Diagnostics and review any repair history the Mac supports. Then inspect the hardware and read the seller’s return and warranty terms.
1. Confirm the exact MacBook model
Ask for the model name and year or generation, then verify that information on the Mac itself. The exact model matters because Apple’s maximum battery cycle count varies between models. Don’t assume that one cycle limit applies to every MacBook.
For the model-specific limit, use Apple’s Mac laptop battery cycle count table. Apple lists a maximum of 1,000 cycles for many MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, but check the row for the specific machine you are considering.
2. Check battery health and cycle count
Read Battery Health
On current macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery and check Battery Health. Apple describes Normal as the battery functioning normally. Service recommended means it holds less charge than when new, though the Mac can remain usable. Factor a service recommendation into your offer or the cost you are willing to take on.

Battery Health and cycle count are separate indicators: check both. See Apple’s instructions for checking a Mac laptop battery’s condition.
Find the cycle count
- Hold Option while opening the Apple menu.
- Choose System Information.
- In the sidebar, open Hardware > Power.
- Under Battery Information, find Cycle Count and compare it with the limit for the exact model in Apple’s cycle-count table.
Apple says a battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original charge capacity at its maximum cycle count. That is a design statement, not a guarantee of the runtime or condition of an individual used battery.

3. Make sure Activation Lock is cleared
Before money changes hands, have the seller turn off Find My and remove the Mac from their Apple Account. Activation Lock may require the previous owner’s Apple Account password or the device passcode to turn off Find My, erase, reactivate, and use the Mac. A reset alone does not establish that the lock is cleared. Apple explains the protection in its Activation Lock for Mac guidance.
Ask the seller to complete the removal while you are present, then confirm you can proceed through setup without being asked for the previous owner’s credentials. Apple also describes removing an offline Mac from an account through iCloud Find Devices. If the seller cannot or will not remove the device, don’t treat the purchase as ready to complete.

4. Run Apple Diagnostics if you can
Apple Diagnostics can help identify a hardware component that might be at fault, and results can include reference codes. It is a useful check, not proof that every possible problem has been ruled out. Apple’s instructions are in Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac.
- Apple silicon: Shut down the Mac, press and hold the power button until startup options appear, then press Command-D.
- Intel: Start the Mac and immediately hold D. If that does not work, try Option-D.
5. Check repair history where available
On an Apple silicon Mac running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, open System Settings > General > About and look for Parts & Service. The section appears only if the Mac detects a repair. Whether it is available and which components it covers depend on the model; Apple says that if a part was serviced more than once, only the most recent service appears.

Labels can include Genuine, Unknown, Unverified, Used, or Finish Repair. Read the label in context rather than treating the presence of this section as a complete repair record. Apple explains the feature and its labels in About Mac parts and service history.
6. Inspect the Mac and the deal
Software checks do not tell you whether the device has cosmetic damage or whether the seller’s terms are suitable. With the Mac powered on, examine the screen, keyboard, trackpad, ports, case, and charger. Test the controls and ports you expect to use, and check that the display and keyboard behave normally.

Read the seller’s return window and warranty terms before buying. Consider the asking price alongside the battery results, any diagnostic codes, repair-history information, and likely service costs. Apple’s technical guidance can help you inspect a device; it does not certify a seller or an individual listing.

The checks above do not establish whether an organization has enrolled the Mac in device management or whether remote management will appear during setup. Do not assume that a successful reset or the absence of Activation Lock proves otherwise. Ask the seller to clarify the Mac’s organizational history and make sure you can complete setup under the agreed return terms before relying on the device.
