This first-day checklist uses Windows 11 as its main path; menu names, available tests, and settings can vary by model, Windows edition, and device-management policy. A quick check can uncover obvious problems, but no single pass proves a laptop is fault-free.
What to do before setting up the laptop
Keep purchase and return details
Keep your receipt or order confirmation, the laptop’s serial number or service tag, packaging, and included charger until the basic inspection is complete. Return and warranty rules depend on your seller, product terms, and location, so check the terms that apply to your purchase rather than assuming a universal deadline.
Inspect the laptop while it is powered off
- Look for shipping damage, cracks, gaps, a bent chassis, damaged feet, or debris beneath the screen.
- Open and close the lid gently; notice any looseness or resistance that seems unusual.
- Check the charger and cable for visible damage.
These are practical observations, not universal pass/fail tolerances. Do not pry open a new laptop or remove internal parts to investigate a suspected defect.
How to check a new laptop for defects
Test the screen and everyday controls
Turn the laptop on and view the screen at ordinary brightness against simple, solid backgrounds. Look for obvious lines, flicker, dead pixels, or pressure marks. Type on every key, move and click the trackpad, and try the speakers, webcam, microphone, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Where practical, check each port with a known-good accessory. These brief checks can reveal symptoms; they do not establish the full health of a component.

Run the laptop maker’s diagnostics
Use the diagnostic utility provided for the exact laptop model. The available tests and their names differ by manufacturer and model.
- HP: HP documents diagnostics in Windows and UEFI, and recommends starting with a Fast Test. If a symptom remains despite a clean fast test, run the relevant extensive or component test. Available checks can include storage, memory, power adapter, battery, and keyboard. HP’s UEFI diagnostics run outside Windows, which can help distinguish a hardware problem from an operating-system or software cause. See HP’s test guidance and HP PC Hardware Diagnostics overview.
- Dell: Dell lists SupportAssist health checks, a pre-boot assessment, and an LCD self-test. Check the support page for your exact model for current instructions and available tests: Dell diagnostics.
A passing result means that the particular test did not detect a problem; it is not a guarantee that every feature is fault-free. If a test reports an error, save the result and any failure ID. Contact the seller or manufacturer rather than opening the laptop.

Check Windows’ health overview
Open Windows Security and look for Device performance & health. Its report covers areas such as storage capacity, battery-related strain, software and app status, and the Windows Time service, and can offer recommendations for detected issues. Treat it as an overview, not a comprehensive hardware acceptance test.
Update Windows and confirm its support status
Install available Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install what is offered, and restart if prompted.
- After restarting, return to Windows Update and check again; updates may arrive in stages.
Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities. Use Windows Update or the laptop maker’s official support page if you need a device-specific driver or firmware. Firmware procedures vary by model, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your device.

Verify that the installed operating system is supported
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. If the new laptop runs Windows 10, confirm that it has a clear path to an operating system that is still supported. See Microsoft’s Windows support notice.
Review security and privacy settings
Check the device-security page
Open Windows Security > Device security. Review the information and controls for Secure Boot, Core isolation, the security processor (TPM), and data encryption. Whether each feature is present or available depends on the laptop’s hardware and Windows version.

Check whether device encryption is enabled, and make sure you can retain and retrieve its recovery key through the appropriate Microsoft or organization-supported method before relying on encryption. Do not assume every Windows laptop automatically encrypts all its data.
Choose diagnostic-data settings deliberately
During Windows setup, you can choose whether to send optional diagnostic data. Microsoft Support says: “Regardless of whether you choose to send Optional diagnostic data, your device will be just as secure and will operate normally.” Optional diagnostics may include additional information about device activity; in some crash cases, memory-state data could include parts of a file in use. Back up before moving files or making major changes
Back up important files before migrating data or making major changes. Microsoft recommends backing up files before installing Windows 11. Keep your old device or a separate backup until you have confirmed that the files you need are present on the new laptop. External storage is one option, but it is not required; cloud storage or another backup method may suit your needs. Microsoft describes external storage as an option in its Windows file-transfer guidance and offers Windows 11 preparation guidance.
What to do if you find a problem
Make a clear record before contacting support. Photograph visible damage, save diagnostic results and error IDs, and note the laptop’s serial number and purchase date. Contact the seller or manufacturer through the process that applies to your purchase and location. Keep relevant packaging and purchase records until the issue is resolved.
Does this checklist apply to a Mac?
No. The diagnostic and settings paths here are for Windows laptops, primarily Windows 11. Do not use them as instructions for a Mac; Apple-specific diagnostic and setup steps are different.
