You can’t make curl click a checkbox on screen. Instead, send the HTTP request the router page expects: include the checkbox’s exact name=value pair, the form’s other required fields, and the same session cookies. The router’s HTML—or the browser request triggered by the checkbox—determines the exact request.

How to submit a router checkbox with curl

First identify how the page sends its settings. The curl project’s guide to scripting HTTP requests and curl manual recommend inspecting the HTML form and submitting its named fields. These commands are templates: replace the example paths and field names with those from your router page.

  1. Fetch the page and save its cookies:
    curl -c cookies.txt -s http://ROUTER/PAGE -o page.html
Use the router’s actual address and page path. If access requires logging in first, authenticate using the router’s own login flow and retain the resulting session cookies.
  2. Inspect the form in page.html: find the form’s action and method, the checkbox input’s name and value, any hidden inputs, and the submit button’s name and value. The action tells you where to send the request; the method tells you whether it uses GET or POST.
  3. For a URL-encoded POST, send the fields and cookies:
    curl -b cookies.txt -c cookies.txt --data 'CHECKBOX_NAME=CHECKBOX_VALUE&SUBMIT_NAME=SUBMIT_VALUE&HIDDEN_NAME=HIDDEN_VALUE' http://ROUTER/FORM_ACTION
Replace the example field pairs with the required values from the form. Include only fields the router expects; hidden inputs may carry state or security tokens.
  4. Check the result: examine the response, then fetch the settings page again using the same cookie jar to see whether the checkbox is now enabled. If the router redirects after saving, inspect the response first; use -L to follow redirects only when that fits the router’s workflow.

What a checkbox sends

A checked checkbox normally contributes its exact name=value pair to a form submission. For example, markup such as <input type="checkbox" name="enabled" value="1"> would submit enabled=1 when checked. An unchecked checkbox normally contributes no pair at all. Don’t guess a value or send one for an unchecked box unless the router’s markup or observed browser request shows that behavior.

Field names and values are case-sensitive in practice: copy them as written. A checkbox’s visible label is not necessarily the parameter name or value.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Match the form’s encoding

For ordinary URL-encoded form submissions, curl’s --data option sends the POST body. Values with spaces or reserved characters need proper encoding. The curl project warns that data must be encoded before it is sent; use --data-urlencode instead of assembling encoded values by hand. See The Art of Scripting HTTP Requests Using curl.

If the form declares enctype="multipart/form-data", use curl’s --form option for the fields instead. Do not choose multipart or URL encoding by guesswork; follow the form’s declaration and request.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Preserve login and form state

The cookie jar options in the examples serve different parts of the exchange: -c cookies.txt saves cookies from a response, and -b cookies.txt sends saved cookies with a request. Use the same jar for the page retrieval and the update so the router can associate the POST with your session.

Include required hidden inputs, submit-button parameters, and any anti-CSRF or state token in the form. The login endpoint, token names, and authentication method depend on the router and firmware, so there is no universal command that can supply them without inspecting the target page.

When the checkbox uses JavaScript

Some router pages update a setting through JavaScript rather than submitting the visible HTML form. In that case, open the browser’s developer tools, inspect the network request triggered by checking the box, and reproduce that request: its URL, HTTP method, headers, body, cookies, and tokens. A simple --data POST may do nothing if the router expects an XHR request to a different endpoint, a JSON body, or a dynamically generated token.

Why a curl request may not change the setting

  • Wrong endpoint or method: match the form’s action and its GET or POST method.
  • Wrong checkbox parameter: copy the checkbox’s exact name and value, not its label.
  • Missing fields: include required hidden inputs and the submit control’s parameter.
  • Missing or stale session: send the cookies from the authenticated page or login flow.
  • Incorrect encoding: use --data-urlencode for values that need URL encoding, or --form when the form uses multipart encoding.
  • JavaScript-managed update: capture and reproduce the actual browser network request instead of guessing a form submission.
  • Redirect or error response: inspect the response before deciding whether to follow a redirect with -L.

An exact working command depends on the router model, firmware, page URL, authentication behavior, and the checkbox’s HTML or captured network request. Without those details, the field names and endpoint cannot be specified reliably.
