Check 5G coverage at the places you actually use your phone, then confirm your exact handset works on the carrier and plan you are considering. Coverage maps can show where service is predicted, but they cannot promise a reliable signal indoors or during busy periods.
Check coverage at the places you go
Start with an independent coverage checker where one is available, then compare its results with the carrier’s own map. Search your home address or postcode, workplace, regular commute and other destinations you visit often. A national coverage claim or a map view of a whole city is not enough to tell you what service will be like in the places that matter to you.
Check indoor and outdoor predictions separately. Walls, building materials, room location, terrain, trees and vehicles can affect reception. Congestion can also affect the experience even where a signal is available. Treat map results as guidance rather than a guarantee for a particular room, journey or time of day.
UK example: Ofcom’s Map Your Mobile
In the UK, Ofcom’s Map Your Mobile lets you search by postcode and view predicted indoor and outdoor coverage for EE, O2, Three and Vodafone. It also provides a performance view at postal-district level. Ofcom says in-home results are guidance and may vary because of local conditions such as buildings, walls and trees. Its checker FAQ explains why an address or provider may not appear and why results can differ from operators’ maps.

Many UK virtual network brands use one of those four networks. Check the host network’s predicted coverage, then verify the virtual provider’s own plan details; brands on the same host network do not necessarily offer identical terms or service.
US example: FCC and carrier maps
In the US, the FCC National Broadband Map shows provider-submitted mobile coverage outdoors or in a moving vehicle, not indoor coverage. The FCC also offers a process to challenge provider coverage data using mobile speed tests. Use the federal map as one source, not as a substitute for checking the carrier’s current map and your specific locations.
Carrier maps have their own limits. For example, T-Mobile says its US map approximates anticipated outdoor coverage and does not guarantee service. Its guidance also says a 5G-capable device and compatible service are required for access to its 5G network. Those statements apply to T-Mobile in the US; check the relevant carrier’s requirements in your market.

Understand what a coverage map can—and cannot—tell you
A predicted coverage map answers whether service is expected in an area. It does not establish the speed or reliability you will experience at a specific address. Ofcom’s checker separates predicted coverage from performance information based on user experience, presented at postal-district level; Ofcom cautions that local results can still vary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReal-world feedback from people who use the same carrier nearby may add useful context, but it is not a guarantee either: performance changes with location, building conditions, device and network demand. If a map looks promising but dependable indoor service is essential, consider a low-commitment way to try the network before relying on it.
Confirm that your new phone can use the network
Before buying a SIM, check the exact phone model—not just the product family or the presence of a 5G logo. Confirm that it supports the carrier’s 5G service and is compatible with the carrier’s network. Also verify whether the phone and provider support the SIM format you plan to use, such as a physical SIM or eSIM, and whether the chosen plan qualifies for the service you want.

- Check that model against the carrier’s compatibility information and 5G requirements.
- Confirm the carrier supports the phone’s SIM or eSIM option and that the selected plan includes the relevant service.
- If buying an unlocked phone, still verify compatibility with the intended carrier; unlocked does not by itself guarantee network support.
Compare SIM plans against your actual needs
Once coverage and phone compatibility look suitable, compare the full plan rather than choosing by the 5G label alone. The right option depends on how much data you use, where you need service and which terms matter to you.
| What to compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Data | Allowance, what happens after it is used, and any speed or traffic-management policies | A large allowance may not help if speeds are restricted under conditions that affect your use. |
| Total cost | Recurring monthly charge and any other charges stated by the provider | Compare the cost over the period you expect to keep the plan, not just a headline offer. |
| Calls and texts | Included allowances and any limits | Make sure everyday use is covered. |
| Hotspot or tethering | Whether it is allowed and subject to a separate allowance or policy | Important if you connect a laptop or another device through your phone. |
| Roaming | Included destinations, allowances, limits and charges | Terms can vary by provider and destination. |
| Commitment and cancellation | Contract length, renewal terms and how to cancel | These determine how easily you can leave if coverage or service disappoints. |
| Provider support | How to get help and whether the available support suits you | Useful when resolving activation, billing or service problems. |
There is no universal best carrier or plan without knowing your locations, phone, budget and data use. Compare only providers that look viable at your regular destinations, then weigh their plan terms against your priorities.
Test service before making a long commitment
If you are unsure about reception or performance, a SIM-only monthly or pay-as-you-go option can provide a lower-commitment way to try a network. Ofcom identifies both as ways to test service. Availability and terms vary, so check the provider’s current price, allowances, renewal arrangements, roaming and cancellation conditions before signing up.

Try the service in the places and situations that matter—such as indoors at home, at work and along your usual commute—rather than relying on a single test. If indoor mobile coverage is weak but you have broadband, Wi-Fi calling may help when both your phone and carrier support it.
Use coverage statistics as context, not a local verdict
Ofcom’s 2025 update reported that UK-wide 4G coverage rose from 91% in 2019 to 96% in 2025; it also said 5G accounted for a fifth of UK mobile traffic and around half of mobile handsets were 5G-capable. These figures describe broad UK trends, not whether a particular phone will work at your address.
Ofcom Group Director Natalie Black said on 26 June 2025: “Map Your Mobile shows detailed coverage and performance based on what smartphones need today. This means the new checker gives different results than the previous tool, but more accurately reflects users’ modern needs.”
