How you change your name in Windows 11 depends on the account type: edit a personal Microsoft account name online, use your organization’s process for a work or school account, or change a local account name in Control Panel. Windows may show different names for a Microsoft account and its local account profile.
First, identify the account type
The name Windows displays can come from a personal Microsoft account, a work or school account, or a local account. Check which one you use before following the steps; changing the name in one place may not change a name managed somewhere else.

Change a personal Microsoft account name
- Sign in to your Microsoft account and open Your info.
- Select Edit name, enter the name you want, and save it. Microsoft’s steps are on its account name and address support page.
- Allow time for the update to appear across Microsoft services. Microsoft says it may take up to 24 hours.
This changes the Microsoft account display name; it does not change an Xbox gamertag.

Change a work or school account name
Use the name-change process provided for your work or school account. Organizations can restrict users from changing their names, so contact your IT administrator if the option is unavailable or the organization manages the account details. Microsoft says a name change may take up to 24 hours to appear everywhere.
Change a local account name
- Select Start, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select User Accounts.
- Select Change your account name, then follow the prompts.
What a name change does—and does not do
Changing an account’s displayed name is separate from renaming the PC. It also should not be assumed to rename the Windows profile folder or change the account’s sign-in identity; Microsoft’s instructions cited above address the displayed account name, not those other items. Microsoft cautions that unsupported non-standard font characters in a username may prevent sign-in, so use a supported character set.
