To change your Zoom name for every meeting, edit your profile’s Display Name. To use a different name just once, change it in the meeting join flow or—after joining—choose Rename under Participants if the host permits it. Zoom’s Display Name is separate from the account’s full name. Zoom Support explains the distinction and the available steps.
Choose when the new name should apply
| What you want | What to do | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Use a name across Zoom | Edit your profile’s Display Name | Requires signing in; profile edits may be restricted by an administrator or SSO setup. |
| Use a name for one meeting, before joining | Enter or replace the name in the join flow | Guests can enter a name without signing in; signed-in users can replace the default. |
| Use a name for one meeting, after joining | Choose Rename from Participants | Available only if the host allows participants to rename themselves; not available in the waiting room. |
Change your persistent Display Name
Editing the profile’s Display Name is Zoom’s cross-platform option. It does not require changing your account’s first or last name unless you also want to update the separate full-name fields.
In the desktop app
- Sign in to the Zoom desktop app for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- Click your profile picture and choose Profile, then My profile. Your browser opens the Zoom web portal.
- On the profile page, click Edit beside your account profile name.
- Enter your preferred name in Display Name. Change the account first or last name only if you intend to change those separate fields too.
- Save the changes.
In the mobile app or web portal
- Android or iOS: Sign in, tap your profile picture, tap My profile, then tap Display name under Personal. Enter the name and save.
- Web portal: Sign in, open Profile, click Edit beside your account profile name, edit Display Name, and save.
For Zoom’s official device-specific instructions, see Changing your display name on Zoom.
Change your name before joining a meeting
The join flow is the simplest way to use a different name for a single meeting. Signed-in participants can replace the default name; guests can enter the name they want other participants to see.

Rename is missing during the meeting
The host may have disabled participant renaming. Zoom’s rename-permission guidance says the setting can be controlled at account, group, or user level. Account owners and administrators manage account- and group-level settings; a user-level control may be unavailable if a higher-level setting is locked. Ask the host whether renaming is allowed, or contact your account administrator if you control the account.

You are in the waiting room
Zoom says participants cannot change their name while in a waiting room. If you need a different name, leave the waiting room and correct it through the meeting join flow before entering, or ask the host for help.
Your profile fields cannot be edited
An administrator may have disabled profile changes. Zoom also notes that SSO login with SAML mapping can prevent users from changing the Display Name through their profile. Ask your account administrator to check the applicable identity and profile settings. The rename setting requires a Basic (Free) account or higher; account- and group-level controls require account-owner or administrator privileges, according to Zoom’s setting requirements.
