To switch from a laptop microphone to a headset on Windows, choose the headset in Settings > System > Sound > Input, then return to Roblox. If it is not detected or voice controls are missing, check Windows microphone permissions and Roblox voice availability.
Change the microphone Windows uses
These steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guidance identifies the system Sound settings as the place to select the recording device.

Connect the microphone or headset you want to use.

Open Settings > System > Sound.

Under Input, open Choose a device for speaking or recording and select the intended microphone.

If available, use Windows’ input test or speak into the microphone to confirm it is being detected. Check that the device itself is connected and not muted.

Windows’ microphone troubleshooting guide covers selecting an input and checking microphone access. If your device does not appear in the input list, verify its connection and that Windows recognizes it before troubleshooting Roblox.
Check microphone permissions
A selected device may still be unavailable to Roblox if Windows blocks microphone access. In Windows Settings, open Privacy & security > Microphone on Windows 11, or Privacy > Microphone on Windows 10. Enable microphone access and app access; for Roblox and other desktop applications, also enable Let desktop apps access your microphone. The exact labels can vary slightly by Windows version.

Return to Roblox and test voice

Join a Roblox experience that supports voice chat.

Check the microphone control in the experience. Roblox describes this control as a mute or unmute toggle; it does not choose a hardware microphone.

Speak and check whether other players can hear you. Roblox’s documentation does not say whether a Windows input change takes effect during an active session. If Roblox still uses the old input, leave the experience and rejoin after selecting the new device.

Roblox’s voice chat instructions explain turning voice on and muting or unmuting. Its Experience Controls identify the voice control as “Voice chat: Toggle microphone (On/Off).” That is an on/off control, not a device picker.
If Roblox has no voice controls
Changing the Windows input device cannot enable voice chat for an account or experience that does not support it. Roblox says voice chat is not enabled by default and is subject to eligibility, regional availability, and experience support. Its current guidance says eligible users aged 13 or older must complete an age check to use voice chat. Check Roblox’s Voice FAQ and the experience’s support for voice if the control is missing. Voice availability across platforms does not mean every platform has a user-facing input-device selector.
