On a supported Chromebook with RGB keyboard hardware, choose a keyboard backlight color in Settings > Wallpaper and style > Set your wallpaper & style > Keyboard backlight. The control is not available on every Chromebook, and ChromeOS 116 does not mean every device supports per-key customization.
Change the color of your keyboard backlight
- Open Settings.
- Select Wallpaper and style.
- Choose Set your wallpaper & style.
- Under Keyboard backlight, choose a color. Google notes that the default keyboard color is based on your current wallpaper; use the picker to select a custom color. See Google’s instructions for gaming features on Chromebook.
Why the keyboard backlight option may be missing
Google documents gaming features for particular Chromebook models, not the entire Chromebook range. Its supported-device list includes the Acer Chromebook 516 GE, ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip, and Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming Chromebook, but Google specifically says the ASUS CX55 Flip does not support an RGB keyboard. A model family name alone therefore does not confirm that a particular configuration has RGB hardware.
- Check the exact configuration: Confirm that your Chromebook has a built-in RGB keyboard. Some listed models or variants may not include one.
- Check ChromeOS: The relevant controls can depend on the device and software build. Update through your Chromebook’s settings if an update is available, then check the personalization path again.
- Distinguish hardware support from a missing setting: If your keyboard is not RGB-capable, a software update cannot add the built-in RGB color control.
What ChromeOS 116 changed—and what it did not establish
The version number needs context: ChromeOS release notes describe four-zone RGB keyboard support in ChromeOS 106 and say supported RGB devices have a link to color selection in Keyboard settings. The release notes do not establish that ChromeOS 116 was the first version to offer RGB colors.
A Chrome OS Beta Community post described per-zone color customization in the M116 beta. That is evidence of a beta feature, not proof that every device running stable ChromeOS 116 had the same controls. Google’s current end-user instructions place color selection under Wallpaper and style; follow the options available on your own supported device rather than assuming per-key or per-zone controls.
