To change how long an Apple TV 4K waits before sleeping, open Settings > General > Sleep After and choose an option. For a one-time countdown, hold the TV button on the remote, select Sleep Timer in Control Centre, and choose a time range.
Change the regular sleep delay
The Sleep After setting controls when Apple TV 4K turns off after a period of inactivity. To change it:
- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Select General.
- Select Sleep After.
- Choose the option you want.
Apple’s current Apple TV 4K guide documents this path. The available choices can depend on your device and tvOS version; Apple’s guide does not list a universal set of durations.

Set a one-time sleep timer
Use Sleep Timer when you want Apple TV to sleep after a countdown without changing its regular inactivity setting:

- Press and hold the TV button on the remote to open Control Centre.
- Select Sleep Timer.
- Choose a time range.
To stop the countdown, open Sleep Timer again and choose Cancel Timer. See Apple’s instructions for Control Centre settings on Apple TV 4K.
Change when the screen saver starts
If you want the display to show a screen saver sooner or later, rather than change when the device sleeps, go to Settings > Screen Saver > Start After. This controls the idle time before the screen saver appears; it is separate from Sleep After. Apple explains the screen saver option in its Apple TV 4K screen saver guide.

If Apple TV still turns off or will not sleep
Check HDMI-CEC behavior
A connected television or A/V receiver may affect power behavior independently of the inactivity delay. When the equipment supports HDMI-CEC, Apple TV can turn on when the TV or receiver turns on or its HDMI input is selected, and turn off when the TV or receiver turns off. Apple documents this behavior in its Apple TV 4K power guide.
Check whether the device is managed
On a supervised Apple TV managed by an organization, an administrator may apply the Prevent Apple TV from going to sleep restriction. Apple lists this restriction as supported starting with tvOS 13, though support can vary by device-management service. See Apple’s device management restrictions for Apple TV.

Consider power use
Apple warns: “Delaying or preventing sleep may increase power consumption.” Apple does not publish a quantified increase in the cited guidance. Choose a longer delay only if it suits how you use Apple TV.
These instructions are for Apple TV 4K; Apple notes that features may not be available on every Apple TV model or in every region.
