The fastest way to change Windows volume from a keyboard is to press its dedicated Volume Up, Volume Down, or Mute key. On many laptops and compact keyboards, these controls share the F1–F12 row and may require holding Fn.
If your keyboard has no media keys, Windows has no universal shortcut such as Ctrl + Up Arrow for volume. You can still change it without a mouse by opening Sound settings or Volume mixer and adjusting the focused slider with the arrow keys.
Use the keyboard’s volume keys
Look for keys marked with a speaker icon, a speaker with sound waves, or a crossed-out speaker. These keys send standard audio-control commands that Windows recognizes as volume up, volume down, and mute controls. The commands are defined in the USB HID Usage Tables.
On a laptop or compact keyboard, use this sequence:

#1 Best Overall
- The things you do most are right at your fingertips with one-touch controls for instant access to play/pause, volume, mute and the Internet.
- Comfortable low-profile keys: Enjoy fast, fluid quiet typing on a familiar standard layout, including number pad.
- High-definition optical mouse: Smooth, responsive cursor control from a comfortable sculpted mouse.
- Sleek and durable design: Thin profile, spill-resistant design, durable keys and sturdy adjustable tilt legs. Tested under limited conditions (maximum of 60 ml liquid spillage). Do not immerse keyboard in liquid.
- Plug-and-play PC compatibility: Simple USB connection. Works with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 or later or Linux kernel 2.6 or later.
- Hold Fn.
- Press the key marked with the volume or speaker icon.
For example, if the volume icons are printed on F2, F3, and F4, press Fn + F2, Fn + F3, or Fn + F4. The exact key assignment varies by manufacturer.
Make media keys work without holding Fn
If the volume key performs its regular F1–F12 action, try holding Fn. To make the media function work without Fn, look for an Fn Lock, F Lock, or manufacturer setting.
- Press the key labeled Fn Lock if your keyboard has one.
- On some Microsoft keyboards, press F Lock to switch between standard and alternate commands.
- On Microsoft’s All-in-One Media Keyboard, Fn + Caps Lock toggles Fn Lock.
- On some laptops, change the setting in the manufacturer’s BIOS/UEFI or keyboard-control application. It may be called Action Keys, Media Keys, or Function Key Behavior.
There is no universal Windows setting for this behavior. The keyboard or PC manufacturer determines whether the top row defaults to F-key commands or media commands. Microsoft explains Fn, F Lock, and alternate command keys in its support documentation.
Is there a universal Windows shortcut for volume?
No. Windows does not define a standard shortcut such as Ctrl + Up Arrow or Alt + Up Arrow to raise system volume. Dedicated media keys, keyboard firmware, or manufacturer software normally provide direct volume control.
The Windows shortcut relevant to sound is:
Windows + Ctrl + V
It opens the sound output page in Quick Settings, where you can access the output device, spatial sound, and Volume mixer. It does not itself increase or decrease volume.
Windows + Up Arrow maximizes the active window; it is not a volume shortcut.

Change Windows volume entirely with the keyboard
Windows 11
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select System, then Sound.
- Under Output, select the device you want to use if necessary.
- Press Tab or Shift + Tab until the volume slider has focus.
- Press Left Arrow or Down Arrow to lower the volume, or Right Arrow or Up Arrow to raise it.
Use Tab to move between controls. The number of key presses depends on the slider’s increments and current position.
Windows 10
Open Start > Settings > System > Sound. Use Tab and Shift + Tab to move through the page, then use the arrow keys when the volume control is focused. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but this remains the standard Sound settings path on systems still running it.

| ms-settings:sound | The Sound settings page |
| ms-settings:apps-volume | Volume mixer in Settings |
After the page opens, use Tab, Shift + Tab, and the arrow keys to reach and adjust the slider. Microsoft documents both commands in its guide to launching Windows Settings pages.
Change the volume of one app
Windows has separate controls for the overall output device and individual applications. An app can be silent even when the main Windows volume is high if its individual slider is muted or set low.
In Windows 11:
- Press Windows + I.
- Go to System > Sound.
- Select Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, move to the affected application’s volume slider.
- Use the arrow keys to raise or lower that app’s volume.
Check the app’s Output device as well. It may be routed to a monitor, headset, or virtual audio device different from the one selected for general system sound. Microsoft’s app-audio troubleshooting guidance covers per-app volume and output selection.

Why the keyboard changes volume but the speakers do not get louder
Windows changes software volume for the selected audio endpoint. It may not override separate physical volume controls elsewhere in the audio chain.
Check for:
- A physical volume knob on powered speakers.
- Volume buttons or a wheel on a headset.
- The volume setting on a monitor with built-in speakers.
- An amplifier or audio interface with its own gain control.
- A low volume setting inside the application, such as a media player or game.
Windows, app, and hardware controls are separate. Check each one if the sound is too quiet.
Fix volume keys that do not work
The keys do nothing
- Press the volume key with Fn.
- Toggle Fn Lock or F Lock.
- Check the keyboard or laptop manufacturer’s media-key setting.
- Replace or charge the batteries in a wireless keyboard.
- Reconnect the wireless keyboard or receiver.
- For a USB keyboard, connect it directly to the computer instead of an unpowered hub.
- Try another USB port.
If ordinary letter keys also fail, investigate a keyboard connection or hardware issue. Microsoft recommends checking power, batteries, cables, USB connections, hubs, and wireless connections in its keyboard troubleshooting guide.
The mute key works, but volume does not change gradually
First test the Windows volume slider. If it changes volume normally but the keyboard only mutes, the likely cause is the keyboard’s media-key mapping, Fn mode, firmware, or manufacturer software.

The volume keys change the wrong device

- Make sure the device is not muted.
- Open the device’s properties and check that it is enabled.
- Check the app’s volume and output device in Volume mixer.

FAQ
How do I turn up the volume using my keyboard?
Press the keyboard’s Volume Up key. If its icon is on an F1–F12 key, hold Fn while pressing it. If it still does not work, try Fn Lock or F Lock.
What is the Windows shortcut for volume up?
Windows has no universal volume-up shortcut using ordinary keys. Dedicated media keys or manufacturer software normally provide that function. Windows + Ctrl + V opens sound controls but does not raise the volume by itself.
How can I change volume without a volume key?
Press Windows + I, open System > Sound, use Tab to focus the volume slider, and press Right Arrow or Up Arrow to increase it. You can also press Windows + R, enter ms-settings:sound, and press Enter.
Why does my keyboard mute sound but not increase or decrease it?
Test the Windows volume slider first. If it works, the issue is probably the keyboard’s media-key mapping, Fn mode, firmware, or manufacturer utility. If the slider also fails, check the output device, Volume mixer, audio enhancements, and driver.
Why does changing Windows volume not make my monitor or speakers louder?
Windows controls software volume for the selected audio endpoint. A monitor, powered speakers, headset, amplifier, or audio interface may have a separate physical volume or gain control.

Use the dedicated volume keys first; on a laptop, they may require Fn unless Fn Lock or a manufacturer setting changes the default. Without media keys, open Settings > System > Sound and adjust the focused slider with the arrow keys. For app-specific problems, use Volume mixer and verify both the app’s volume and output device.
