You can change Copilot’s spoken voice in its Voice settings, control microphone access through the browser or device, and manage privacy options in Settings. First identify whether you use a personal Microsoft account or a work or school account: the privacy controls and data-handling details differ. Personal Copilot also has updated and older app interfaces with different settings paths.
Check your account and Copilot app version first
Personal-account instructions below apply to Copilot signed in with a Microsoft account. Work or school accounts use Microsoft 365 Copilot with an organizational Entra ID account; its settings and data-handling rules are separate. Do not assume a personal-account privacy option or retention period applies to an organization account.
Microsoft says its updated personal Copilot app became available on August 18, 2026. If your settings do not match the paths below, check whether you have the updated app and use the instructions for your interface. Microsoft’s updated privacy guidance applies to personal Microsoft accounts, not work or school accounts.
Start, mute, or end a Copilot Voice conversation
Personal Copilot
- Open Copilot and select the microphone or Voice icon in the message composer.
- If prompted, allow microphone access in your browser or device settings. Wait for Copilot’s audio greeting, then speak.
- To pause listening during the conversation, select the microphone control. Select it again to resume.
- Select X to end the session. Voice sessions may have time limits and disconnect automatically.
Microsoft’s Using Copilot Voice with Microsoft Copilot explains the controls. The microphone button inside a conversation mutes that session; it does not revoke Copilot’s permission to access the microphone.

Work or school Copilot Chat
In Copilot Chat, select Start a new voice chat in the prompt box. Allow microphone access if prompted. Browser or device settings control that permission, and voice sessions may have limits. Availability depends on subscription and region, so check the current eligibility information for your account rather than assuming the feature is included.

For personal Copilot, Microsoft documents these paths. Labels can vary by app version; update the app if the options differ.

- copilot.com: Select your profile icon, select your profile name, then select Voice and choose a voice.
- Copilot for Windows or macOS: Select your profile icon, open Settings, select Voice, and choose a voice.
- Copilot mobile app: Open the menu, select your profile icon, then select Voice Settings. Choose a voice and, if wanted, adjust playback speed.
Grant or revoke microphone access
When Copilot asks to use the microphone, approve the request to start a voice conversation. To stop Copilot from accessing the microphone in the future, change its permission in your browser or device settings. The exact menu names depend on your operating system, browser, and app, so use that platform’s microphone or privacy settings rather than relying on a universal Copilot path.
- Mute: Stops Copilot listening within the current voice session; you can resume from the same conversation.
- Revoke permission: Prevents the browser or device from granting microphone access to Copilot until you allow it again.
Choose the right privacy controls for your account
Personal account in the updated Copilot app
In the updated personal app, open Settings > Personalization and turn off One shared experience to disable the documented personalization experience. This is separate from managing chat history and from personalized advertising. Microsoft says generic ads can use the current conversation but do not use past chat history; personalized ads may use chat history, saved memories, and other Microsoft data you choose to share. Turning off personalization is not the same as turning off personalized ads or deleting conversations.

Personal account in the older app interface
Microsoft’s legacy privacy instructions apply to the older personal Copilot app. Its controls cover personalization and memory, Microsoft usage data, use of conversation activity and voice conversations for training, advertising, and conversation history. Use the path for your device:
- Personalization and memory: On web or desktop, select your profile icon, your profile name, then Memory > Personalization and memory. On mobile, open the menu, select your profile icon, then Memory > Personalization and memory. Turning this off makes Copilot forget conversational memories and stops future personalization; it does not delete past conversations.
- Training controls: On web, select your profile icon, your profile name, then Privacy. On Windows or macOS, select your profile icon, open Settings > Privacy. On mobile, open the menu, select your profile icon, then Account > Privacy. Opting out excludes future conversation activity from training, but Microsoft says that activity may still be used for other stated purposes, including product or system improvement, advertising, digital safety, security, or compliance.
Advertising is a separate control, not part of the personalization and memory setting. Microsoft’s Microsoft Copilot privacy controls page describes the older interface and its options.

Work or school account
Personal Copilot’s privacy paths and retention details do not automatically apply to Microsoft 365 Copilot. For the documented work or school chat-history feature, Microsoft says you can turn off Chat history personalization in Copilot Chat settings; inferred data is removed from the Copilot system after 30 days. That interval concerns those history inferences, not personal chat-history retention or voice audio.

For signed-in personal Copilot users, Microsoft says conversation history is retained for 18 months by default. Conversations can be deleted individually or in full, and activity history can be managed through the Microsoft privacy dashboard. Turning off personalization in the older personal interface does not itself erase past conversations. The 18-month figure is Microsoft’s stated period for personal conversation history; it is not a universal retention rule for every Copilot account.

Work or school voice and history data have different contexts. Microsoft’s 2026 work or school voice overview says audio temporarily stored for feedback scenarios is deleted after 48 hours; it is accessed only if feedback is submitted, and background sounds may be included. The same overview says dictation speech is sent for conversion to text and the dictation service does not store the audio or dictated text. Read aloud uses client-side text-to-speech and does not record or store audio. These work or school details should not be generalized to personal Copilot.
Know which Copilot audio feature you are using

These are distinct features: dictation creates text from your speech, read aloud speaks a response, and Copilot Voice is a live conversation. Microsoft’s Copilot Voice overview describes the work or school features and their data handling.
