“Turn off hard disk after” controls how long Windows waits for disk read and write activity to stop before it spins down storage. It is separate from the timer that puts the computer to sleep. You can change the disk timeout in a power plan’s advanced settings when Windows exposes the control; use Windows 11’s Power & battery settings instead to change when the PC sleeps.
What “Turn off hard disk after” does
Windows’ disk idle timeout measures inactivity on the storage device: no disk reads or writes for the configured interval. When the interval expires, Windows can spin down the storage media. Microsoft identifies this setting by the DISKIDLE power-setting alias and describes the behavior in its Idle Power Management documentation.
That activity is not the same as keyboard or mouse inactivity. A computer can be in use while a disk has no reads or writes, or the disk can be active while you are away from the keyboard.
Change the disk idle timeout in a power plan
- Open Control Panel, then go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Find the selected power plan and choose Change plan settings.
- Choose Change advanced power settings.
- Expand Hard disk, then Turn off hard disk after.
- Set the timeout for the plugged-in and, if available, battery cases. Choose Never if you do not want Windows to spin down the disk after an idle interval.
- Select Apply, then OK.
The exact setting’s visibility can vary. Microsoft lists the disk settings subgroup as hidden, and an organization’s policy can control whether users can see or change the value. If Hard disk or its timeout control is absent or unavailable, the computer may not expose it to users or an administrator may manage it.

Disk idle timeout and system sleep are different settings

Changing the disk timeout will not change when the computer sleeps. To adjust sleep or screen behavior, use the separate Settings controls above.
AC, battery, and managed-device settings
Microsoft documents Balanced-plan defaults of 60 minutes on AC power and 30 minutes on DC (battery) power. These are documented defaults, not a guarantee that a particular PC currently uses them: power plans, manufacturers, and administrators can alter the configuration. The Microsoft disk idle policy documentation gives the defaults and explains that the power savings vary by device make and model.

On managed PCs, an administrator can set separate plugged-in and battery timeouts through policy, with values specified in seconds. Microsoft documents these controls for Windows 11 version 21H2 and later on listed managed editions. The applicable policy can also determine whether users can change the setting; see Microsoft’s ADMX_Power Policy CSP documentation.

Microsoft says its cited idle power management policy is not used on Windows clients with Modern Standby. Therefore, the documented disk idle policy and defaults should not be assumed to govern every Windows 11 device.

Microsoft does not give a generally applicable energy-savings amount or wake-up delay for changing this timeout. Any power benefit or time before a disk is ready again depends on the device; the documentation does not support promising a specific figure.
