To change the Windows 10 Start menu layout, resize it by dragging its top or side border, switch it to full screen in Settings > Personalization > Start, or adjust the tiles and app list separately. Windows 10 has no single master layout switch; use the control that matches what you want to change.
Resize the Start menu
- Open Start.
- Move the pointer to the menu’s top or side border. When it changes to a double-headed arrow, drag the border to the size you want.
This changes the menu’s dimensions without switching it to full screen.
Make Start full screen
- Open Settings > Personalization > Start.
- Turn on Use Start full screen.
To return to the regular menu, go back to the same setting and turn it off. Microsoft documents both menu resizing and the full-screen option in its Windows Start menu customization guidance.
Move, group, pin, or remove tiles
Move and group tiles
- Drag a tile to move it to another position.
- Drag one tile onto another to create a folder. Drag more tiles into the folder as needed.
- To remove a tile from a folder, open the folder and drag the tile out.
Pin or unpin an app
- To add an app, search for it, right-click the result, and select Pin to Start.
- To remove a tile, right-click it and select Unpin from Start.
Show or hide the app list
Open Settings > Personalization > Start and change Show app list in Start menu to control whether the app list appears in Start.

Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. According to its guidance, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date, although the PC continues to work. The guidance does not say that Start menu customization stops working.
