Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo change when your Lenovo laptop’s display turns off, open Windows Settings and adjust the screen-off timer. In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Set separate times for battery and plugged-in use if those options appear. The sleep timer is separate, so change it only if you also want Windows to put the laptop to sleep.
Change the screen timeout in Windows 11
- Save any active work, then open Start > Settings.
- Go to System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Lenovo confirms this Windows 11 settings area in its Power and Sleep options guide.
- Under Turn my screen off after, choose the interval you want for On battery and When plugged in. The choices let you keep the display on longer at a desk while using a shorter timeout when unplugged.
- Close Settings. The selection takes effect during inactivity; observe the display through a normal idle period to check that the interval suits your needs.
Change the screen timeout in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep.
- Under the screen controls, choose when the display turns off for battery and plugged-in use, if both choices are shown.
- Close Settings and check the behavior during ordinary inactivity.
Windows labels can vary by release. If you do not see the route above, search Settings for Power & sleep or screen and sleep, and confirm which Windows version is installed. Microsoft documents the Windows 10 and Windows 11 routes in its battery-saving guidance.
Screen timeout and sleep are different settings
Turn my screen off after controls the display: when its timer expires, the screen goes dark, but that setting alone does not put the laptop to sleep. Make my device sleep after controls when Windows enters sleep. In Windows 10, screen and sleep timing are likewise separate controls. Change the sleep setting only if you intend to alter when the laptop enters sleep, which can interrupt tasks that need the computer to stay awake, such as downloads or remote sessions.
Lid-close and power-button behavior are also separate from the inactivity screen timer. Windows exposes those actions through Power Options; changing them will not adjust the screen timeout.

Choose an interval for your work and battery needs
- For presentations or long tasks: use a longer screen-off interval for the power state you will use, so the display is less likely to go dark while you are occupied.
- To reduce idle power use: choose a shorter interval, especially when running on battery. Microsoft recommends shorter screen and sleep timers among energy-saving options, but the right setting depends on your workflow.
- For mixed use: set different battery and plugged-in intervals when Windows offers both. For example, you can favor convenience at a desk and a quicker screen-off while unplugged.
Microsoft’s published timer examples vary by device category and power state; they are not universal Lenovo defaults or predictions of battery savings. Choose based on how you use the laptop rather than assuming a particular example applies to your model. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 power settings.

If the screen timeout setting is missing
- Confirm your Windows version and search Settings for the relevant power or screen-and-sleep controls.
- Some options depend on device capabilities. On supported Windows 11 PCs, an optional Automatically turn off my screen when I leave presence-sensing setting may appear under screen and sleep settings; it is separate from the basic inactivity timer. Microsoft explains its availability in Managing Presence Sensing settings.
- If the laptop is managed by a work or school administrator, policy may control which settings you can change.
- Consult the guide for your exact Lenovo model if a control remains unavailable. Lenovo’s guides are model-specific, so instructions for one laptop should not be assumed to apply to all Lenovo models.
