These controls are in the classic Keyboard Properties dialog. They are not the same as Filter Keys in the Ease of Access settings.
Change the keyboard repeat rate and delay from Control Panel
The quickest reliable method is to open Keyboard Properties with a Run command.
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter control keyboard and press Enter.
- In the Keyboard Properties window, select the Speed tab.
- Under Character repeat, adjust the following sliders:
Setting What it changes Repeat delay How long you must hold a key before Windows starts repeating it. Move it toward Short for a quicker response. Repeat rate How quickly the character repeats after repetition begins. Move it toward Fast for more repetitions per second. - Click in the test box and hold a key, such as a letter or Backspace, to test the result.
- Select Apply, then select OK.
A short delay and fast repeat rate are useful when you frequently hold Backspace, Delete, an arrow key, or another key while editing text. If held keys repeat too easily, move Repeat delay toward Long or reduce the Repeat rate.

Set the values in the Registry
Use the Registry only if the Control Panel settings do not stick or you need to apply the normal values directly. These are per-user settings, so they affect the Windows account under which you make the change—not every account on the computer.
Before editing, create a restore point or export the relevant registry key. An incorrect registry edit can cause unrelated Windows settings to behave unexpectedly.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type regedit and press Enter.
- If User Account Control asks for permission, select Yes.
- Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard.
- In the right pane, locate KeyboardSpeed. Double-click it, choose Decimal, and enter a value from 0 through 31. The value 31 represents the fastest normal repeat-rate setting.
- Locate KeyboardDelay. Choose Decimal and enter a value from 1 through 3. The value 1 represents the shortest setting in the normal range.
- Close Registry Editor and sign out, restart Windows, or reopen the affected application.
The registry names can be counterintuitive: KeyboardSpeed controls repeat rate, while KeyboardDelay controls repeat delay. Do not edit similarly named values in an unrelated registry location unless you specifically intend to configure an accessibility feature.
Do not use Filter Keys to make typing faster
Windows 10 also has keyboard options at Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard. The relevant feature there is Filter Keys, but it is not the normal repeat-rate control.

Filter Keys is an accessibility feature that can ignore brief or repeated keystrokes. Depending on its configuration, it may suppress rapid taps or change how held keys are handled. That makes it unsuitable as a replacement for the Repeat delay and Repeat rate controls.
The registry location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\Keyboard Response, including values such as AutoRepeatDelay, AutoRepeatRate, DelayBeforeAcceptance, and Flags, belongs to Filter Keys and Keyboard Response. Those values are not interchangeable with KeyboardDelay and KeyboardSpeed.
What to do if the setting keeps resetting
If the sliders return to their previous positions after a restart, try these checks:
- Open Keyboard Properties again with control keyboard.
- Set both sliders, select Apply, and then select OK.
- If the change is still lost, set KeyboardSpeed and KeyboardDelay manually under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard.
- Restart Windows and test the keyboard again.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the change may not work everywhere
Windows’ repeat settings control the operating system’s normal character-repeat behavior. They do not guarantee identical timing in every program. A game, remote-desktop client, text editor, keyboard driver, or manufacturer utility can process keyboard input independently.
Also, a key that produces two characters from one physical press does not necessarily have a repeat-rate problem. Switch bounce, a failing keyboard, drivers, or keyboard software can cause key chatter. Test the keyboard in another application or with another keyboard before trying to solve a hardware fault with Windows repeat settings.

Windows 10 support note
Windows 10 Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations reached the end of normal support on October 14, 2025, with version 22H2 as the final release for those editions. Windows 10 LTSC editions follow separate support lifecycles. The Keyboard Properties method remains the applicable Windows 10 procedure where the operating system is still in use.
FAQ
What is the difference between keyboard repeat rate and repeat delay?
Repeat delay is the waiting period after you hold a key before Windows begins repeating it. Repeat rate is the speed of repetition after it begins.
What is the fastest normal keyboard repeat rate in Windows 10?
In the standard registry setting, KeyboardSpeed values run from 0 through 31, with 31 representing the fastest normal repeat-rate setting. The Keyboard Properties slider is limited to Windows’ built-in range.
Why does my keyboard type double letters?
Double characters can result from switch bounce, keyboard hardware, drivers, or manufacturer software. Changing repeat delay or rate is not a universal fix for one press producing multiple characters.
Should I change AutoRepeatRate in the Registry?
Not for ordinary keyboard repeat. AutoRepeatRate is associated with the accessibility Keyboard Response or Filter Keys subsystem. Normal repeat uses KeyboardSpeed and KeyboardDelay under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard.
Will changing these settings affect every Windows user?
No. The Registry values are under HKEY_CURRENT_USER, so they apply to the current Windows user account. Applications can also apply their own keyboard-input behavior.
The Bottom Line
For normal Windows 10 keyboard behavior, press Windows key + R, run control keyboard, open the Speed tab, and adjust Repeat delay and Repeat rate. Use the Registry values KeyboardDelay and KeyboardSpeed only when the graphical settings do not persist. Avoid confusing these controls with Filter Keys.
