You can also select several type layers at once to apply a font across them, or use Photoshop’s missing-font controls when a document’s original typeface is unavailable.
Change the font on one text layer

In the Layers panel, select the text layer. A type layer has a T icon. If the text has been rasterized, it is no longer editable as type, so you cannot change its font directly.

Select the Horizontal Type or Vertical Type tool.

In the Options bar, open the font selector, search for a font, and choose the font family and style you want. If the Options bar is hidden, choose Window > Options.

To change only part of the text, select the characters in the text before choosing a font. Otherwise, the selected type layer’s text receives the change.

Photoshop’s font selector can filter fonts, including Adobe Fonts, variable fonts, favorites, and similar fonts. If a family has multiple variants, expand it and select the specific style. Adobe’s guide to editing text on a type layer and its font-style search instructions describe these controls.
Apply a font to multiple text layers

Choose the Horizontal Type or Vertical Type tool.

Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) and select the type layers you want in the Layers panel.

Choose the font from the Options bar’s font selector.
Adobe documents this method for changing fonts across selected layers in its multiple-layer font instructions.

Fix a missing font
What to do depends on whether the missing typeface is an Adobe Font or another font:

Missing Adobe Font: If you are online, Photoshop may activate the font automatically. Adobe indicates that a blue sync icon appears while activation is in progress. If Photoshop prompts you to replace the font while activation is still underway, cancel the prompt and let activation finish, or choose a replacement if you need to proceed.

Missing non-Adobe font: Choose Type > Manage Missing Fonts and select a replacement, the default font, or no replacement. Adobe identifies Myriad Pro Regular as the default replacement for Roman text in this workflow.
A replacement can change the text’s line breaks or spacing if its metrics differ from the original. Check the layout after replacing a font. For the documented steps, see Adobe’s instructions for replacing missing fonts.

If the font change does not work or Photoshop is unstable

Confirm that you selected the intended type layer and font style. If only some characters should change, verify that those characters were selected.

Check that the layer is still editable type rather than rasterized text.

If the font picker or Photoshop is unstable, Adobe recommends updating Photoshop, resetting preferences and Photoshop’s font cache, restarting, and setting Type > Font Preview Size > None. Adobe also advises updating or temporarily disabling third-party font managers; on macOS, it describes validating fonts with Font Book.
Font-cache locations and cleanup steps differ between Windows and macOS, so follow Adobe’s platform-specific font troubleshooting guidance rather than deleting files using a generic cache path.
