Install the launcher you want to use first. Android only lists apps that identify themselves as a compatible Home app; installing one does not necessarily make it the default.
On most phones, the setting is here:
Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app
Choose your launcher from the list. The exact wording differs on some manufacturers, especially Samsung.
Change the launcher from Android Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Default apps.
- Tap Home app.
- Select the launcher you want to use.
Press the Home button or swipe up from the bottom of the screen to test it. The selected app now handles the Home screen, app drawer, widgets, and related Home navigation.
If you cannot see Home app, open Settings search and search for Home app, default apps, or launcher. The menu may also be hidden if the phone is managed by an employer or school.

Samsung Galaxy: select One UI Home or another launcher
Samsung uses slightly different menu wording:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Choose default apps.
- Tap Home app.
- Select the launcher.
Samsung’s built-in launcher is normally called One UI Home. Select it whenever you want to return to Samsung’s standard Home screen.
Pixel phones
On a Pixel, use Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app. The stock launcher is generally listed as Pixel Launcher. The Home app option may appear only after Android detects more than one qualifying launcher.
Motorola phones
On current Motorola software, use:
Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app
Motorola’s built-in launcher is identified as Moto App Launcher on supported devices.
Older Motorola versions may use one of these paths instead:

Choose the launcher from the Home-screen prompt
After installing a launcher, press the Home button or use the Home gesture. Android may display a chooser asking which app should handle Home.

- Select the launcher.
- Tap Always to make it the permanent default.
- Tap Just once if you want to test it temporarily.
If the prompt no longer appears, use the Home app setting instead. The labels can vary by Android version and manufacturer.
Switch back to the original launcher
You do not need to uninstall the third-party launcher. Open the same Home-app menu and select the phone’s built-in launcher:

Leaving the alternative launcher installed makes it easier to switch back later. Uninstall it only if you no longer want it available.
Clear a launcher’s default when Android keeps selecting it
If Android keeps opening the wrong launcher, or the chooser behaves unexpectedly, clear the current Home association without deleting the launcher’s layout:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the launcher currently associated with Home. Tap See all apps first if necessary.
- Tap Open by default.
- Tap Clear default preferences.
Press Home again and select the launcher you want.
Some phones call this option Set as default, Clear defaults, or use slightly different wording. Do not confuse it with Clear storage or Clear data. Clearing the launcher’s data can reset its Home-screen arrangement, widgets, folders, and other settings; it is not merely a way to change the default.

Why the launcher is not staying selected
Common causes include:
- The launcher was force-stopped, disabled, or uninstalled.
- A system update changed or reset default-app associations.
- Another installed app also qualifies as a Home app and was selected instead.
- The launcher does not fully support the Android Home-app role.
- The phone is using a managed, kiosk, dedicated-device, or restricted-user configuration.
Reopen Home app and select the launcher again. If it disappears from the list, check whether it is still installed and enabled.
Android 15: Private Space apps may be missing
A third-party launcher can be the default and still fail to show apps installed in Android 15’s Private Space. Android requires a launcher to support the private-space launcher container and the ROLE_HOME role before those apps can appear.

Therefore, seeing your regular apps while Private Space apps are absent does not necessarily mean the launcher failed to become the default. It may simply lack the required Private Space support.
Work-managed and kiosk devices
A company-managed phone, school device, kiosk, or dedicated Android device can enforce a particular Home app. An administrator may set a persistent preferred Home activity or prevent users from installing or selecting another launcher.
A work profile alone does not always block changing the launcher in the personal profile, but the organization’s policy can restrict the available choices. If Home app is missing, disabled, or immediately changes back, contact the device administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy.

Set the launcher with ADB
ADB is an optional technical method for a device with USB debugging enabled. It is not required for the normal Settings procedure.

adb shell am get-current-userThen set the Home activity, replacing USER_ID and PACKAGE_NAME:
adb shell cmd package set-home-activity --user USER_ID PACKAGE_NAMEFor example, for the primary Android user:
adb shell cmd package set-home-activity --user 0 com.example.launcherThe package must actually be a Home app. An ordinary app package will not work. Android identifies qualifying launchers through the Home intent category and the ROLE_HOME role. A full activity component can be supplied, but Android uses the package to determine the actual Home activity.
Do you need root, an unlocked bootloader, or Developer Options?
No. On an ordinary Android phone, the supported Home app menu is enough. Root access and an unlocked bootloader are not required, and Developer Options are not needed for the standard method. ADB is only an alternative for cases where you specifically need a command-line solution and have USB debugging configured.
FAQ
Why is my new launcher not listed under Home app?
It may not have installed correctly, may be disabled, or may not declare itself as an Android Home app. Confirm that the app is installed and compatible with your Android version, then restart Settings and check the Home app list again.

Does installing a launcher automatically make it the default?
No. Installation makes a compatible launcher available. You must select it from the Home-screen chooser or from Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app.
Will changing launchers delete my apps?
No. Changing the Home app normally changes the Home screen, app drawer, widgets, and launcher settings. Your installed apps remain on the phone. The new launcher may not preserve the previous launcher’s layout.
Can I switch launchers without uninstalling the old one?
Yes. Leave both launchers installed and switch between them from the Home app menu whenever you want.
Why does Android ask which launcher to use every time?
The launcher’s default association may have been cleared, or Android may not have saved the choice. Open the launcher’s app settings, choose Open by default, tap Clear default preferences, then press Home and select the desired launcher using Always.

Will changing the launcher show Android 15 Private Space apps?
Only if the launcher supports Android’s Private Space launcher requirements. A launcher can work normally for the main profile while omitting Private Space apps.
The Bottom Line
