To change the bank account funding FASTag auto-recharge, manage the mandate through the issuer of your current tag or the payment app that holds it. First identify whether the setup is a bank standing instruction or UPI AutoPay; then update the funding source or cancel and set up a new mandate if the issuer requires it. The exact controls and authorization steps vary by issuer.

Before you change anything: identify the issuer and mandate

  1. Find the issuer. Check your FASTag account, SMS or email alerts, or the portal where you manage the tag. For a bank-issued FASTag, the issuing bank handles the account and recharge support; NHAI directs customers to their respective bank portal or customer care. See the NHAI FASTag FAQ.
  2. Identify how auto-recharge was authorized. A bank standing instruction and UPI AutoPay are different mandates. The controls may be in the issuer’s FASTag portal, bank net banking, or the UPI app used to authorize AutoPay.

Changing the payment source for the same issuer is not the same as switching the FASTag to a different issuer bank. You usually do not need to close or replace the tag merely to change its funding account.

Change the funding account or replace the mandate

  1. Open the relevant account. Sign in to your current issuer’s FASTag portal or open the payment app that holds the mandate.
  2. Locate auto-recharge controls. Look for a section named standing instruction, auto-recharge, or UPI AutoPay. Labels and available actions differ by issuer.
  3. Change or recreate the mandate. If an edit option is available, select the new funding account. If not, follow the issuer’s instructions to cancel the existing mandate and create a new one using the intended account. Do not assume every issuer supports editing an existing instruction.
  4. Authorize the new source. Complete the verification requested by your issuer or payment provider. This may involve an OTP, bank login, or confirmation in a UPI app; no single method applies to every setup.
  5. Verify it is active. Check the issuer portal or payment app for the new mandate’s status and funding source. If possible, confirm the next scheduled top-up or mandate status before relying on auto-recharge for a trip.

If you cannot find an account-change option, contact the current issuer’s official FASTag support channel before cancelling anything.

How the process differs by FASTag and mandate type

Setup Where to manage it What the available guidance establishes
Bank-issued FASTag with a standing instruction The issuing bank’s FASTag portal or, where supported, its net-banking interface The issuer manages the instruction. Whether an existing account can be edited or must be replaced depends on the bank.
Bank-issued FASTag with UPI AutoPay The issuer’s FASTag portal or the UPI/PSP app holding the mandate Mandate controls may let you modify or cancel it; the exact process is issuer-specific.
NHAI bank-neutral FASTag linked through My FASTag My FASTag and the linked standing instruction NHAI describes automatic top-ups below a minimum threshold and an auto-top-up amount chosen when the standing instruction is provided. Its FAQ does not give universal current steps for changing the linked account.

Official issuer examples—not universal instructions

Axis Bank UPI AutoPay

Axis Bank says its FASTag UPI AutoPay setup is under Payment Section → UPI AutoPay Setup in the Axis FASTag online customer portal. Customers authorize through a chosen UPI app and set recharge and threshold amounts. Axis says the mandate can be modified or cancelled through its portal or a PSP app. These steps apply to Axis’s UPI AutoPay flow, not every FASTag issuer. See the Axis Bank FASTag page.

ICICI Bank standing instructions

ICICI describes setting up FASTag standing instructions through its customer portal or retail net banking. Its net-banking instructions include selecting the savings account from which the funds will be deducted. This is an ICICI-specific example and does not establish that other issuers offer the same account-edit process. See ICICI Bank’s FASTag recharge page.

If you meant changing the FASTag issuer bank

Issuer portability is a separate process from changing the account that funds auto-recharge. A Ministry of Road Transport and Highways release dated 11 September 2026 announced OneTag, developed jointly by IHMCL and NPCI. It says the Rajmargyatra app guides users through eligibility checks, verification, consent, issuer selection, and onboarding. The release says the existing Tag ID and vehicle registration number remain unchanged after successful portability; the former issuer handles verification and prior-wallet matters such as refunds and pending transactions, while the selected issuer completes onboarding. Follow the app’s current instructions to check whether your account is eligible. See the Ministry’s OneTag announcement.

Why auto-recharge is linked to an account

In its 19 February 2025 clarification on FASTag rules, the Ministry said customers are encouraged to link their FASTag wallet to UPI, current, or savings accounts under auto-recharge settings to avoid manual recharges. That statement describes the purpose of auto-recharge; it does not specify a universal process for changing an existing mandate. See the Ministry’s clarification on the FASTag rule.
