For smoother motion, set the PS5 game preset to Performance Mode, then check the individual game’s graphics menu: each game decides which modes it offers and how they affect the picture. You can also enable 120 Hz output or VRR in the PS5’s video settings, but only when your display and the game support them.

Choose the right graphics mode for your priority

Sony describes Performance Mode as an option to make game motion smoother and Resolution Mode as an option for higher graphic quality. These presets are preferences for games that offer the modes, not a system-wide guarantee of a particular frame rate or resolution. The exact tradeoff depends on the game.

Your priority Starting choice What to expect
Smoother motion Performance Mode, when the game offers it Sony describes this mode as making motion smoother. The result and implementation vary by game. PlayStation Support.
Higher graphic quality Resolution Mode, when offered Sony describes this mode as providing higher graphic quality; it does not specify a universal resolution or frame rate across games. PlayStation Support.
Adaptive display presentation VRR, if the display and game support it VRR adjusts the display refresh rate in real time. Its effect varies by TV, game, and selected visual mode. PlayStation Support; Sony’s VRR announcement, April 25, 2022.
120 Hz video signal 120 Hz Output, if the display and game support it This enables a compatible output path; it does not add 120 Hz support to a game that lacks it. PlayStation Support.

Set the PS5 game preset

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets.
  2. Choose Performance Mode or Resolution Mode as your default preference. Pick Performance Mode when smoother motion matters more; choose Resolution Mode when you prefer higher graphic quality.
  3. Start the open-world game and open its own graphics, display, or video menu. Review the modes it actually lists and select the motion-oriented option if available. Game-specific labels and effects vary, so revisit the choice if you prefer more image detail.

Sony’s game-presets guidance says the presets apply to games that offer those modes. It does not give one frame-rate or resolution result that applies to every open-world title.

Check video output, VRR, and 120 Hz

  1. On the PS5, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. The page shows information about the connected HDMI device, including resolution, VRR, and HDR. For resolution, Automatic selects the highest resolution the TV supports, according to Sony’s resolution and video-output guide.
  2. Turn on 120 Hz Output only if you want to use 120 Hz with a compatible display and a game that supports 120 Hz frame rates. If a game has display problems, Sony recommends turning this setting off.
  3. Enable VRR when the connected display and game support it. Sony says VRR results vary by TV; its April 25, 2022 announcement also notes variation by game and selected visual mode. If enabling Apply to Unsupported Games causes unexpected effects, turn that option off.
  4. If your TV supports ALLM, the PS5 can switch it to low-latency mode while playing. Sony notes that some TVs label this feature Game Mode. See the PS5 features page and video-output support guide for compatibility details.

When to test 1440p output

If your display supports 1440p, choose Test 1440p Output on the Video Output page to check compatibility with SDR and HDR at 60 Hz or 120 Hz, as well as VRR. Sony notes that a 4K game displayed on a 1440p screen may benefit from improved anti-aliasing through supersampling. This is an option to assess display compatibility and image quality, not a general way to make gameplay smoother. Sony’s resolution and video-output guide.

Troubleshoot a 4K 120 Hz signal

If the display loses or fails to show a 4K 120 Hz signal, check the connection chain before buying anything. Sony recommends checking these points:

  • Confirm the TV supports 4K at 120 Hz and update its firmware.
  • Use the cable included with the PS5, or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz.
  • Connect the console to the TV’s HDMI port that supports 4K 120 Hz; not every port on a TV necessarily supports the same features.
  • Check whether a receiver or other intermediary device is affecting the signal.
  • Review the PS5’s resolution and video-transfer-rate settings; Sony’s troubleshooting guidance lists Automatic or 2160p resolution and an Automatic video transfer rate among the checks.

A new cable is not a routine graphics-setting requirement: Sony recommends the cable supplied with the console. See Sony’s 4K and video-output troubleshooting guide for the full compatibility guidance.
