To set the page opened by Edge’s Home button, go to Settings > Start, home, and new tab page, turn on Show home button on the toolbar, and choose a page or enter a URL. To open a website automatically when Edge launches, configure When Edge starts separately; these settings do not change the New Tab page.
Microsoft Edge uses three settings that are often confused:
- Home page: the page opened by the Home button.
- Startup page: the page or pages Edge opens when it launches.
- New Tab page: the page shown when you open a new tab.
Setting one does not automatically change the others. The steps below show how to configure each one on Windows, Android, and—where Microsoft supports it—iPhone and iPad.
Set the home page in Microsoft Edge on Windows
These instructions apply to the current Chromium-based Edge on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select the Settings and more button—the three dots (…) in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings.
- In the left-hand menu, select Start, home, and new tab page.
- Turn on Show home button on the toolbar.
- Under the Home button setting, select Enter URL for a page that you want to use as your home page.
- Enter the complete address, including https://, such as https://www.example.com.
Edge adds a Home button to the toolbar. Select that button at any time to open the address you entered.
Use the New Tab page as the home page
If you do not want a specific website, select New tab page instead of entering a URL. The Home button will then open Edge’s built-in New Tab page.
If the Home button is already showing
The button’s visibility and destination are separate controls. If the Home button is already visible, go to … > Settings > Start, home, and new tab page, then change the option beneath Show home button on the toolbar. Turning the switch on or off does not change where the button goes.
Open a website automatically when Edge starts
Use startup settings if your goal is to open a website whenever Edge launches. Changing the Home page alone will not normally do this.
- In Edge, select … > Settings.
- Select Start, home, and new tab page.
- Find the When Edge starts section.
- Select Open these pages.
- Select Add a new page.
- Enter the website’s full address, such as https://www.itechguides.com, and select Add.
You can add more than one page. Edge will open each address in its own tab when the browser starts.

Customize the New Tab page
The New Tab page has its own settings. To change its appearance:
- Open a new tab.
- Select the Page settings gear icon in the upper-right corner.
- Choose the available layout, background, quick-link, and content options.
These controls customize Edge’s built-in New Tab page. They are not a general setting for replacing every new tab with an arbitrary website URL. If you want a particular website available from the Home button, set it as the Home page. If you want it to open at launch, add it under When Edge starts.

Set the home page in Edge on Android
- Open the Edge app.
- Tap the … menu button.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Home page.
- Choose A specific page.
- Enter a web address, use the current page, or paste a copied address.
- Tap SAVE.
To use Edge’s standard start page instead, choose New tab page in the Home page settings.
What about Edge on iPhone and iPad?
Microsoft’s current Edge mobile documentation provides instructions for a custom Home page URL on Android, but does not provide equivalent instructions for assigning one on iOS. The iPhone and iPad documentation focuses on New Tab page settings. Microsoft’s HomepageLocation browser policy is also not supported on iOS.
You can still customize the available New Tab options in Edge for iPhone or iPad, but the Android steps above should not be assumed to work on iOS.
Fix a missing, locked, or changing home page
Check whether an organization controls Edge
On a work or school computer, an administrator may control the Home button, home-page URL, or startup behavior. A mandatory policy can prevent you from changing the setting, while a recommended policy may provide a default that you can override.

To see the policies currently applied to Edge, enter this exact address in the address bar: edge://policy.
Look for policies such as:

HomepageLocation is configured, but the Home button opens a New Tab
The HomepageIsNewTabPage policy can take precedence over HomepageLocation. If it is enabled, Edge uses the New Tab page for the Home button even when a home-page URL has also been specified. An administrator must disable that policy before the configured URL can be used.
Startup pages keep being replaced
If RestoreOnStartup is managed, Edge may not allow users to choose a different startup option. A list supplied through RestoreOnStartupURLs applies only when RestoreOnStartup is set to open a list of URLs. The corresponding policy value is 4.
Configure Edge for an organization
Administrators can configure these settings through Group Policy. The mandatory policy location is:
Computer Configuration or User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge > Startup, home page and new tab page
For defaults that users may override, use:
Computer Configuration or User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge – Default Settings (users can override) > Startup, home page and new tab page

On Windows, mandatory policy values are stored under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge. Recommended values use HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge\Recommended.
For example, these registry values set a home URL, display the Home button, prevent the New Tab override, and open a specified list of startup pages:

Startup URLs are stored as numbered string values under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge\RestoreOnStartupURLs, for example the values 1 and 2.
Do not edit policy settings on a managed computer unless you administer it. After changing Windows Group Policy, run gpupdate /force from an elevated Command Prompt.
Close and reopen Edge afterward so the updated policies are detected.

Why does Edge open a different page when it starts even though I changed the home page?

How do I show the Home button in Microsoft Edge?
Open … > Settings > Start, home, and new tab page, then turn on Show home button on the toolbar. Choose New tab page or enter a custom URL for the button.
Can I set every new tab to open a specific website?
Edge’s built-in New Tab settings let you customize layout, background, quick links, and content. Microsoft does not document those settings as a general way to assign an arbitrary URL to every new tab.
Why is the Home page option unavailable in Edge?
A work, school, or other administrator policy may be controlling it. Open edge://policy and check for HomepageLocation, HomepageIsNewTabPage, or ShowHomeButton policies.
What is the correct URL format for an Edge home page?
Enter the complete address, including the protocol—for example, https://www.example.com. An incomplete address may not be treated as the website you intended.
