To change recognition, start with the app that identifies music; to control whether its alerts reach your watch, check the phone’s notification permissions and the watch’s app-notification settings.
First, identify which setting you need
Music recognition, notification delivery, and notification sound are separate controls. A recognition app may have its own setting for identifying songs and sending alerts. Android or iPhone notification permissions determine whether it can notify the phone, while the watch and its companion app control which notifications appear on the watch. Do Not Disturb and mute affect whether notifications interrupt you; they do not turn music recognition on or off.
Google says a Wear OS watch matches the paired phone’s settings for whether it vibrates or stays silent for notifications. The available controls can vary by watch maker, model, and software version. Google’s Wear OS notification guidance describes general notification handling, not a universal music-recognition setting.
Change notification behavior on the watch
Silence notifications temporarily
- Wake the watch and swipe down from the top of the screen.
- Tap Do Not Disturb or Mute notifications, depending on the control shown on your watch.
- To receive alerts normally again, return to the same control and turn it off.
These controls can suppress or silence alerts, but they do not disable recognition inside the music app. Google notes that behavior can depend on the phone and watch. Google’s instructions for changing sound and notification settings cover these watch controls. Theater mode may also affect alerts, so check it if notifications seem to stop.

Block or restore alerts from particular apps
On Android, open the Wear OS app or your watch maker’s companion app on the phone, open Notifications, and look for the app blocking or filtering controls. The exact label varies; some watches use “Filter watch notifications.” Use the list to block or restore notifications for the recognition app. Google’s Wear OS notification instructions explain the general route.
Pixel Watch app controls
For a Google Pixel Watch, open the Google Pixel Watch app > Settings > Notifications > App notifications on the phone. Choose the relevant phone or watch app, then switch its notifications on or off. These are notification controls; recognition itself may have a separate setting in the app that identifies music. See Google’s Pixel Watch notification instructions.

Troubleshoot music-recognition alerts in order
- Check the recognition app. Confirm that it can identify music and that any in-app alert or notification option is enabled. The setting depends on the app, so consult that app’s own controls.
- Check phone notification permission. Make sure the recognition app is allowed to send notifications on the paired phone. On Android, Google also recommends checking the app’s Android notification setting.
- Check the watch companion app. Open its Notifications or app-filtering list and make sure the recognition app is not blocked. Pixel Watch users can use the app-notification path above.
- Check alert-silencing modes. Turn off Do Not Disturb or mute if you want audible or vibrating alerts, and check Theater mode if notifications are not appearing as expected.
Google’s notification troubleshooting guidance also points Android users to the phone app’s notification settings and the companion app’s blocked-app list. Check the recognition app’s own alert controls first: allowing notifications on the phone and watch cannot make an app send an alert it is not configured to send.
If your paired phone is an iPhone
Notification routing has an additional Bluetooth permission to check. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends enabling Share System Notifications for the watch in the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings, confirming that the app is allowed to notify and show on the lock screen, and checking the Wear OS app’s Notifications list. What Wear OS does—and does not—guarantee
The official general Wear OS help pages document notification and sound controls, but do not establish a platform-wide switch for music recognition. Nor do they guarantee that a Pixel phone’s Now Playing feature or any third-party recognition app will forward alerts to every Wear OS watch.
A Google Play listing describes Now On Wrist as an optional third-party app for ambient music recognition on Wear OS. That listing is not proof of independent performance or universal compatibility. Check the app’s current listing and requirements before relying on it; it is not a built-in Wear OS setting.

Sound settings are not recognition settings
Media volume changes playback volume; it does not enable music recognition or notification delivery. Google also notes that sound settings may not appear on watches without a speaker. If an alert is missing, troubleshoot recognition and notification permissions separately from volume. See Google’s sound and notification guidance.
