Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo make a Kindle easier to read, open a book, tap the top of the screen, select the Aa Page Display icon, and adjust the options available under Font, Layout, More, or Themes. The exact controls depend on your Kindle model, app, and the book’s format.
Change reading settings on a Kindle e-reader
- Open the book you want to read.
- Tap near the top of the screen to show the reading toolbar.
- Tap the Aa Page Display icon.
- Choose a tab and adjust the controls it offers. Amazon notes that display settings vary by Kindle model (Amazon’s Kindle text display instructions).
Font
Choose an available typeface, increase or decrease the font size, or adjust boldness if your model offers it. Amazon also documents changing text size with a pinch gesture while reading.
Layout
Depending on the device and book, Layout may let you change line and paragraph spacing, margins, portrait or landscape orientation, and text alignment. If justified text looks uneven, try left alignment when that option is available.
More and Themes
More includes options such as reading progress and the reading clock. Themes can change the page background and save a combination of Font, Layout, and More settings. The available choices differ by model.

Change text size in the device settings on selected models
Some newer Kindle e-readers have a separate font-size control outside the book’s Aa menu. Amazon documents it for Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and later, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft. Open Settings > Screen and brightness > Display & text size, then use the displayed control; on Kindle Scribe, Amazon describes tapping or dragging the slider (Amazon’s device-level font-size instructions). This setting is distinct from changing text size inside a book, and Amazon does not document it for every Kindle model.
Change reading settings in the Kindle app
- Open a book in the Kindle app.
- Tap the top-center area of the screen.
- Tap Aa, then choose the tab for the setting you want to change.
Amazon documents controls for font size, font type, spacing, and brightness on Android and iOS. Depending on the app and device, layout options may include page color, margins, text alignment, and orientation lock; themes and assistive features are also documented. Options and labels differ across Android, iOS, macOS, web, and PC, so use the controls shown in your version of the app rather than expecting every platform to have the same menu (Amazon’s Kindle app reading settings).

Choose adjustments for the problem you notice
- Text is too small: Increase font size in the Aa menu. If you use one of the selected e-reader models with a device-level control, you can also adjust size in Settings.
- Text looks too thin: Increase boldness if the option is available.
- Lines feel crowded: Try changing line or paragraph spacing under Layout, where supported.
- Text feels cramped at the edges: Adjust the margins if your device or app provides that control.
- Justified text looks uneven: Try left alignment if available. Amazon’s publishing guidance describes support for ragged-right alignment and layout refinements, but a particular book’s result can depend on its content and device (Amazon’s Enhanced Typesetting guidance).
- The page appearance is uncomfortable: If offered, try another background or page color, or save a different theme. App options vary.
These are settings to try according to your preference, not medical advice or guaranteed recommendations for every reader.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why font or layout changes may not work in a book
Many Kindle books are reflowable: text adapts to the screen and to supported font and layout choices. Other books use a fixed layout that preserves the page design. Print replica books, manga, comics, and some children’s books and textbooks may restrict changes to font, color, margins, spacing, or alignment. Amazon explains these format differences in its Kindle visual-adjustment guidance; book detail pages may also indicate visual-adjustment support based on information supplied by the publisher. Amazon’s publishing guidance on reflowable and fixed-layout content describes how those formats are handled.

Check whether the book supports adjustments
- Make sure you are changing settings from inside the open book’s Aa menu.
- Try the same setting in a different book known to be reflowable. If it works there but not in the first title, the first book’s format may be the reason.
- Check the book’s detail or accessibility information for whether visual adjustments are supported.
Not every book supports every appearance change, even when the Kindle or app has that control.
