To change a file or folder icon on Mac, copy an image in Preview, then paste it onto the item’s small icon in Finder’s Get Info window. For folders, you can also choose a color, symbol, or emoji without replacing the icon with an image.
Change a file or folder to a custom image icon
Apple documents this method in its macOS 26 Mac User Guide. It uses Preview and Finder; no separate icon utility is needed.
-
Open the picture you want to use in Preview.
-
In Preview, choose Edit > Copy.
-
In Finder, select the file or folder whose icon you want to change.
-
Choose File > Get Info.
-
In the Info window, click the small icon at the top, just below the title bar.
