To assign a graphics preference to an individual app in Windows 10, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics settings, add or select the app, choose Options, then pick a preference and save. Windows may label the page Graphics on some builds.
Set a graphics preference for an app
- Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
- Open Graphics settings. On some builds or help pages, this is labeled Graphics. Microsoft’s current battery-saving instructions describe the route through Graphics.
- Under the app-type selector, choose Desktop app for a traditional installed program or Microsoft Store app for an app installed from the Store.
- Add or select the app. For a desktop app, browse to its executable file; for a Store app, choose it from the available list.
- Select the app, choose Options, pick a graphics preference, then select Save if shown.
The preference applies to the selected app, not every program on the PC. A Microsoft Community Support Specialist’s Windows 10 guidance also describes choosing the app type and then selecting the app’s graphics preference.
Choose between power saving and high performance

These are preferences, not guarantees that an app will use a particular chip in every situation. If both choices show the same GPU, or the GPU you expect is missing, the dialog alone does not establish a fault. Which GPUs Windows exposes depends on the hardware, drivers, and configuration; consult the PC or graphics-device maker for model-specific troubleshooting.
If the app does not seem to follow the preference
After saving a change, close and reopen the app before checking whether it takes effect. Microsoft’s current Windows 11 instructions explicitly say to save and restart the game or app. That is useful corroborating guidance, not a Windows 10-specific guarantee.

Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended after that date; changing an app’s graphics preference does not change Windows support status. See Microsoft’s Windows support information.
