Windows 11 does not include a native folder-color picker. You will not find a standard Folder Color command, color palette, or Explorer setting that changes the yellow folder icon.

Without installing software, the practical solution is to assign a colored .ico file to the folder. Windows then displays that colored icon wherever the folder appears in File Explorer. The folder itself is unchanged: its name, contents, permissions, and location remain the same.

What Windows 11 can and cannot change

Task Supported without extra software?
Assign a different icon to one folder Yes
Make the standard yellow folder icon any color No
Use a colored icon from an .ico file Yes
Apply a color automatically to every folder No
Change desktop icons such as Recycle Bin or This PC Yes, but this does not affect ordinary File Explorer folders

The built-in procedure is therefore more accurately described as changing a folder’s icon, not changing a folder-color attribute. Windows stores this type of customization through Explorer’s folder settings and, in many cases, a hidden desktop.ini file. Microsoft documents the folder customization mechanism.

Method 1: Assign a colored icon through Properties

This is the simplest method when you already have a colored folder icon file. Windows can use an icon supplied by the system or an icon resource stored in an .ico, .bmp, .exe, or .dll file. An .ico file is the best choice because it is specifically designed for icons.

Step 1: Get a colored .ico file

You need an icon file that visually represents the color you want, such as blue, green, red, or purple. Windows does not include a built-in icon-color editor, so you must create the icon yourself with an image editor that can export .ico, or obtain one from a source you trust.

Keep the file in a permanent location. If you move or delete the icon later, the folder may revert to the default icon because its customization still points to the old file.

Step 2: Open the folder’s customization controls

  1. Right-click the folder in File Explorer.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Customize tab.
  4. Click Change Icon….

On some Windows 11 installations, the compact context menu does not show Properties. In that case, right-click the folder, select Show more options, and then choose Properties.

The Customize tab and Change Icon… control apply to the selected folder. They are not global Explorer settings.

Step 3: Select the colored icon

  1. In the Change Icon dialog, click Browse….
  2. Navigate to your colored .ico file.
  3. Select it and click Open.
  4. Choose the icon preview if more than one is shown.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Apply, then OK.

Explorer should now display the colored icon. If it does not update immediately, press F5 in the folder window, close and reopen File Explorer, or sign out and back in.

Using an icon stored in a Windows file

The Change Icon dialog can also browse icon resources in Windows files. After selecting Browse…, you can try a system file such as an executable or DLL that contains icons. This may provide alternative symbols, but it usually will not provide a complete set of colored folder icons.

For a genuine colored folder appearance, select a colored .ico file rather than expecting a Windows DLL to contain a color palette.

Method 2: Customize the folder manually with desktop.ini

The Properties method normally handles the underlying configuration for you. Manual editing is useful when you are deploying the same customization to several folders or troubleshooting a configuration that was copied from somewhere else.

Microsoft’s documented structure looks like this:

[.ShellClassInfo]
ConfirmFileOp=0
NoSharing=1
IconFile=Folder.ico
IconIndex=0
InfoTip=Some sensible information.

Here, IconFile=Folder.ico points to an icon file in the same folder, and IconIndex=0 selects the first icon in the resource. If the file contains only one icon, use IconIndex=0.

Manual setup

  1. Place the colored icon, for example Folder.ico, inside the folder you want to customize.
  2. Create a text file named desktop.ini in that folder.
  3. Enter the configuration shown above, changing the icon filename if necessary.
  4. Save the file in Unicode format.
  5. Open Command Prompt and mark the folder as a system folder:

attrib +s "C:\Path\To\Folder"

  1. Mark desktop.ini as hidden and system. For example:

attrib +h +s "C:\Path\To\Folder\desktop.ini"

Restart Explorer or refresh the window after making the change. This method changes the folder’s icon wherever that folder is displayed in Explorer; it does not add a separate color property.

If direct folder customization does not work

Use a shortcut as a fallback

If the folder’s Customize tab or Change Icon… control is unavailable, customize a shortcut instead:

  1. Right-click the folder and select Create shortcut. If Windows cannot create it in the same location, it may place the shortcut on the desktop.
  2. Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Click Change Icon…, browse to the colored .ico file, and select it.
  5. Click OK, then OK again.

This changes only the shortcut’s icon. The original folder’s icon remains unchanged in its normal File Explorer location.

Check whether Windows is hiding the update

Refresh the Explorer window with F5. If that fails, close all File Explorer windows and reopen them. A sign-out or restart can also force the icon cache to refresh.

Check the icon path

If desktop.ini refers to Folder.ico, that file must be where the configuration expects it. A moved, renamed, or deleted icon file can cause Windows to show the default folder icon.

Important issue after the June 9, 2026 security updates

Microsoft says security updates released on June 9, 2026 introduced additional hardening for desktop.ini processing. Windows may ignore a customization file when it cannot establish that the file came from a trusted source. The folder and its contents remain accessible; only the custom icon or localized folder name may disappear. See Microsoft’s guidance on the change.

Microsoft lists Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1 among the affected releases. Common causes include:

UGREEN USB C Hub 5 in 1 Multiport USB Adapter 4K HDMI, 100W Power Delivery
  • 5 in 1 Connectivity: The USB C Multiport Adapter is equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 100W USB C PD port, a 5 Gbps USB A data port, and two 480 Mbps USB A ports
  • A desktop.ini file downloaded from the internet and carrying Mark-of-the-Web.
  • Files copied from some WebDAV or HTTP-based locations.
  • A network path that Windows does not classify as intranet or trusted.

If the file is yours and you trust its source, remove the internet mark with PowerShell:

Unblock-File "C:\Your\Folder\Path\desktop.ini"

To process matching files below a folder:

Get-ChildItem "C:\Your\Folder\Path" -Recurse -Filter desktop.ini -Force | Unblock-File

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only do this for trusted files. Removing Mark-of-the-Web also removes the security protection associated with it.

For managed work environments, Microsoft’s lower-risk workaround is to add a known internal source to Trusted Sites. A broader Group Policy option is Allow the use of remote paths in file shortcut icons, under Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → File Explorer. Enabling that policy reduces protection against malicious remote folder-customization content, so use it only with an administrator’s approval.

Settings does not change ordinary folder icons

A frequently suggested route is Settings → Personalization → Themes → Desktop icon settings. That page controls common desktop icons such as This PC, Recycle Bin, Network, and User’s Files. It does not change the icon or color of arbitrary folders in File Explorer. Microsoft explains the desktop icon settings.

What not to expect

  • There is no standard Windows 11 context-menu item called Folder Color or Change Folder Color.
  • Windows does not provide a built-in color palette for the standard yellow folder icon.
  • Changing a folder icon does not change the folder’s permissions, storage location, or file contents.
  • Manual desktop.ini editing does not create a searchable folder-color property.

FAQ

Can I change a folder to red, blue, or another color in Windows 11 without installing software?

Yes, but only by assigning a colored icon file to the folder. Windows 11 does not recolor its standard yellow folder icon directly.

Where is the folder color setting in Windows 11?

There is no built-in folder color setting. Use Right-click folder → Properties → Customize → Change Icon…, then select a colored .ico file.

Why is the Customize tab missing?

The Customize tab and Change Icon control are folder-specific. Make sure you right-clicked an actual folder rather than a library, search result, shortcut, or special Windows location. You can also use Show more options → Properties from the Windows 11 context menu.

Will the colored icon appear on another computer?

Only if the icon resource and its folder customization are copied correctly and the other computer accepts the associated desktop.ini. A shortcut icon is tied to the shortcut, not the original folder.

Is it safe to run Unblock-File on desktop.ini?

Use it only when you trust the file and its source. The command removes Mark-of-the-Web, which removes the associated security protection.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The Bottom Line

Windows 11 cannot natively recolor the standard folder icon. Without software, place a trusted colored .ico file somewhere permanent, then use Right-click folder → Properties → Customize → Change Icon…. For advanced or copied configurations, a properly formatted, trusted desktop.ini can do the same job. If direct customization is unavailable, change the icon of a shortcut instead—but remember that this affects only the shortcut.
