You can change Discord’s appearance without installing a theme app or modifying the client: use the built-in User Settings > Appearance controls on desktop, or open Settings > Appearance from the avatar menu on mobile. Available themes differ by platform, and some custom-color controls are limited to Nitro subscribers.
Change your Discord theme on desktop
- Open Discord and select the gear icon to open User Settings.
- Select Appearance.
- Choose an available built-in theme: Light, Ash, Dark, Onyx, or Sync with computer.
Discord’s Appearance settings can vary slightly between clients. Its official appearance guide describes the desktop and mobile options.
Change your Discord theme on mobile
- Tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap the gear icon in the upper-right corner to open Settings.
- Scroll to Appearance.
- Choose Light, Dark, Midnight, or Automatic. Automatic follows your device’s appearance setting.
What to know about syncing themes across devices
Discord offers a Sync across clients option that can carry a desktop-selected theme across desktop, mobile, and browser. A synced theme may not look identical everywhere: Discord notes that desktop Ash, for example, appears as Dark on mobile. Check Appearance on each device if you want to confirm how the setting is rendered.
Use custom colors and readability controls
Custom-color themes
Discord documents additional custom-color controls for Nitro subscribers. In Appearance, eligible users can choose a light or dark palette, pick colors or enter hex values, create gradients using up to five colors, adjust gradient direction and intensity, and select Apply to save. These options may not appear for every account or client, so use the controls shown in your own settings rather than expecting identical options on every device.

Adjust the interface without a theme app
If your goal is a more readable or less crowded screen, Discord’s built-in Appearance settings also include UI density choices (Compact, Default, and Spacious), message spacing, zoom, chat font scaling, and message group spacing. These controls change the interface without requiring a custom theme installer.
Why avoid unofficial Discord theme installers?
Discord’s Terms of Service prohibit “using any unauthorized software designed to modify the services.” The terms also state: “You may not copy, modify, create derivative works based upon, distribute, sell, lease, or sublicense any of our software or services.” These terms are effective September 29, 2025, and were last updated August 29, 2025. Read the current Discord Terms of Service before using software that alters the client.

For a theme change, the native Appearance controls are the supported route. Avoid third-party client modifications and theme injectors; the cited policy prohibits unauthorized modification software, but it does not establish that every tool steals credentials or that every use leads to an account sanction.
