Start in the game’s title screen or options menu and look for separate settings for voice or dialogue, subtitles, text, and language. If the game does not offer the controls you need, check its launcher or console settings. The available languages—and whether spoken dialogue can differ from subtitles—depend on the game, edition, and platform.
Change the settings in the game first
Open the title screen or main menu and check Options, Settings, Audio, Language, or Accessibility. Look for distinct choices such as Voice or Dialogue and Subtitles or Text. If both are available, set them independently to create a mixed-language setup, such as one spoken language with subtitles in another.
Menu placement varies by game. Konami says that language can be changed from the main menu, and notes for some titles that the setting is available only from the Title Menu rather than other Options menus. The console or computer language does not necessarily need to be changed. See Konami’s language-change guidance and its title-menu instructions.
If the game has no language control, check the platform
Steam on PC
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- Open Language and choose a language supported by that game.
- Let Steam download any required language files before launching the game.
Steam cautions: “If the game supports the language you have selected, files for that language may need to be downloaded before you can play.” A Steam language choice does not guarantee that every game supports it; third-party games may also manage language independently in their own settings. Check the particular game’s Steam store listing and Steam Support’s language-setting instructions.

Nintendo Switch
Switch software uses the console’s selected language when that language is supported by the game. This system-level choice does not establish that voice and subtitle languages can be chosen separately. Check the game’s own options or official support page if you need different languages for audio and text. Nintendo explains this rule in its language support guidance.
PlayStation 5
- Open Settings.
- Go to Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets.
- Review Subtitles and Audio and choose the available subtitle and audio preferences.
Sony’s presets include enabling subtitles and choosing console-language game audio or original audio. They apply only to PS5 games, and Sony warns that some settings may not apply to every game. The game may have its own controls or limitations; see PlayStation’s Game Presets instructions.

Xbox
There is no universal Xbox path established here for changing dialogue and subtitle languages across games. Start with the game’s options and official support page before changing console language settings; a system-language change may not provide separate audio and subtitle choices.
Check what the game allows before changing an existing save
Language settings can differ even within one game. Square Enix says that in Secret of Mana, voiceover can be changed through the options menu during play, while on Steam the subtitle choice cannot be changed after selection at the beginning of the game. Check the title-specific instructions before starting or continuing a save if choosing subtitles correctly matters to you. See Square Enix’s Secret of Mana FAQ.

What to verify if the result is not what you expected
- The language is missing: Confirm that the specific game edition supports it. A language listed by a launcher or selected on a console is not proof that the game includes it.
- Audio changed but subtitles did not: Check whether the game provides separate controls. Some games tie dialogue and text to a single language choice.
- The selection has not taken effect: For Steam, allow any language files to finish downloading. If the game offers an apply or restart prompt, follow it; requirements vary by title.
- You cannot change subtitles mid-game: Consult the game’s support page or menu notes before restarting or beginning a new save. Some titles restrict the choice to initial setup.
- A console preset has no effect: Check the game’s own options. Platform presets have defined scope and may not be honored by every title.
Before settling on a language combination
Confirm which languages the specific edition supports, whether voice and subtitles have independent controls, where the selection is made, and whether it can be changed after starting. Also check whether a download is needed. These details determine whether a particular combination—such as original-language dialogue with translated subtitles—is available.
