Care for overnight orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses with the rigid gas-permeable (GP) cleaning, disinfection and storage system prescribed for your lenses—not generic soft-lens directions. Wash and dry your hands before handling lenses, keep lenses and cases away from water, use fresh solution as labeled, and remove lenses promptly if your eyes develop pain, unusual redness or vision changes. Your eye-care professional’s directions and the exact lens and product labels take precedence over this general routine.
Why ortho-k lens care needs to be lens-specific
Ortho-k lenses are rigid gas-permeable lenses worn during sleep to temporarily reshape the cornea. The care routine depends on the lens and prescribed care system. Some GP systems use separate products for cleaning, rinsing, disinfection and storage; others use a multipurpose product. Do not assume that instructions for soft contact lenses apply to GP lenses. Paragon Vision Sciences tells users of its CRT lenses to use the care system recommended by their eye-care professional: Paragon CRT Contact Lens Care & Eye Health.
Keep the product packaging and instructions available, and ask your eye-care professional or pharmacist before substituting a solution, case or eye drop. A product sold as rigid gas permeable contact lens solution is not automatically compatible with every ortho-k lens or care routine.

- Wash and dry your hands. Wash thoroughly before touching lenses, then dry with a clean, lint-free towel. Paragon’s CRT lens application and removal instructions also advise checking lenses for chips or cracks and not inserting a damaged lens.
- At removal, clean and disinfect as directed. Cleaning helps loosen and remove deposits and debris; disinfection targets harmful germs. They are different jobs, and saline alone does not disinfect. Use the cleaner and disinfecting or storage product—and the sequence, rubbing or rinsing steps—specified for your GP lenses. See the CDC’s guidance on cleaning, disinfecting and storing contact lenses.
- Use fresh solution. Add or replace solution as directed. Do not top off old solution or reuse it; FDA advises discarding leftover solution after each use. Never use a solution beyond its labeled instructions or substitute saline for a disinfecting step.
- Care for the case. Follow the care-system directions for cleaning the case. CDC advises rinsing or rubbing it with fresh solution—not water—emptying excess solution and allowing it to dry with the caps off. FDA advises replacing a contact-lens storage case every three months or as directed by your eye-care professional.
- Inspect before insertion. Check the lens for damage and follow the exact application method you were taught. Paragon’s instructions for its CRT lenses describe filling the lens bowl with doctor-recommended artificial tears before application; that direction is specific to those instructions, not a universal step for every ortho-k lens. Use only drops approved for your lenses and advised by your clinician.
Keep water and saliva away from lenses
Do not shower, swim or use a hot tub while wearing contact lenses. Do not rinse lenses or cases with tap water, wet lenses with saliva, or store lenses in water. Water can carry germs, including Acanthamoeba, which can cause serious eye infection. The CDC explains why contact lenses should be kept away from water; FDA also describes contact-lens risks.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s 2022 Refractive Errors Preferred Practice Pattern states: “Tap water should be eliminated from the care regimen, as its use is associated with the prevalence of Acanthamoeba keratitis, particularly in cases associated with overnight orthokeratology, as is topping off of solutions.” Paragon’s current GP-care guidance says to rinse with multipurpose solution or sterile saline, not tap water. Older ortho-k material may give different directions; use the current instructions for your prescribed lenses and products, not a historical tap-water recommendation.

- MADE FOR HYDROGEN PEROXIDE CARE: This contact lens case works with hydrogen peroxide contact solution and has a built-in neutralizing disc. If your routine already uses peroxide, it's an easy swap. Always follow the directions that come with your solution.
- MARKED R AND L BASKETS: Each contacts case has separate right and left baskets with clear markings, so you never have to guess which lens goes where. This matters if your prescriptions differ between eyes. The baskets rotate 360° and hold each lens in place, so it stays put while soaking and is easy to take out.
- VENTED LID WITH SMOOTH THREADS: A tiny vent hole in the lid lets gas escape while the peroxide neutralizes, which is why a regular sealed contact container doesn't work for this type of system. The smooth, ridged screw lid is easy to twist on and off, even with wet or slippery hands, and it's designed to help prevent spills when you pack it.
- SMALL ENOUGH FOR HOME OR TRAVEL: Each lightweight, barrel-style case measures about 54.6 mm tall and 31.5 mm wide, so it slips into a handbag, gym bag, carry-on, or toiletry kit without taking up space. The clear body lets you see at a glance that the solution level looks right and the lenses are seated in the baskets.
- 3-PACK OF CONTACT LENS CASES: You get three complete cases, so you can keep one on the bathroom counter, one in your travel bag, and one as a spare. Having extras makes it easier to swap in a fresh case on schedule. Rinse the case with fresh solution after each use, let it air dry, and replace it as often as your solution manufacturer recommends.
If water touches a lens
Remove the lens promptly. CDC advises discarding a lens that has been exposed to water or cleaning and disinfecting it overnight before wearing it again. Follow your own lens instructions and contact your eye-care professional if you are unsure what to do, particularly if irritation or vision changes occur. Never rinse the lens with water to clean it.

Use peroxide systems only as labeled
Hydrogen peroxide systems can disinfect lenses, but the solution must be fully neutralized before a lens goes into the eye. Use only the special case supplied or specified for that system, and allow the full neutralization time on the label. Do not put unneutralized peroxide directly in your eye or apply it to a lens just before insertion. An ordinary lens case is not a substitute for the system’s required case. FDA explains these precautions in its guide to safe use of hydrogen peroxide contact-lens solution.

What to ask before changing products
Choose care products by compatibility with your prescribed GP lenses and care regimen, rather than by a general claim that a product is suitable for contacts. Ask your eye-care professional whether the system requires separate cleaning, rinsing, disinfecting or storage steps; whether rubbing is required; which case to use; and whether any rewetting drops are appropriate. Saline may be directed for rinsing in some regimens, but it does not disinfect. Do not rank products by infection-prevention effectiveness based on claims that have not been established for your specific lenses and routine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to stop wearing lenses and get help
Remove the lenses immediately and contact an eye-care professional right away if you have pain, unusual redness, discharge, excess tearing, light sensitivity, itching, burning, a gritty feeling, swelling, blurred vision or other significant irritation. Do not put the lenses back in while you wait for advice. These symptoms need professional assessment; do not try to diagnose the cause yourself. FDA lists these warning signs in its contact-lens safety guidance. Keep the lenses in their case if possible, because the clinician may want to examine them.
