Care for leather sneakers by identifying the upper’s finish first, brushing off dry dirt, cleaning gently with a compatible method, and letting them air-dry at room temperature. Use conditioner or water-repellent treatment only when the shoe maker says it suits the material. Those steps help avoid common cleaning and drying damage, though no care routine can guarantee a particular lifespan.
Start by identifying the leather
“Leather” can mean smooth, oiled, waterproof, suede, nubuck, coated, or mixed-material uppers, and these finishes do not all take the same care. Check the shoe’s label, product page, or maker’s care instructions before applying water, cleaner, conditioner, or spray. SOREL, for example, gives different instructions for waterproof, oiled or dry-tanned, and suede or nubuck leather (SOREL care guide). OAO likewise notes that care depends on the product and material, including the type of conditioner used (OAO care guide).
For mixed-material sneakers, treat each section according to its material and use products compatible with all the parts they touch. For patent, coated, or unusually finished leather, the sources cited here do not establish a universal cleaning formula; follow the maker’s specific instructions rather than guessing.

A gentle cleaning routine
- Remove loose dirt while the shoes are dry. Use a soft, dry brush to lift dust and grit before adding moisture. SOREL recommends a soft dry brush for sneakers, and Saucony recommends a soft-bristle brush for leather (SOREL care guide; Saucony care guide). Nikwax notes that dirt particles can abrade leather fibers, which is a reason to clean regularly rather than let grime build up (Nikwax leather-footwear care).
- Clean the upper using the method for its finish. For general sneaker stains, SOREL advises gently dabbing with a washcloth and soap-and-water or another mild detergent solution. Its material-specific instructions say to wipe waterproof leather with a damp cloth; for oiled or dry-tanned leather, use a little leather cleaner and then wipe away residue with a damp cloth. These are examples of why the shoe’s own guidance matters—not interchangeable directions for every leather sneaker (SOREL care guide).
- Clean laces and soles separately where practical. Remove the laces if needed and wash them with a mild solution, then dry them with a cloth. Clean the midsole and outsole separately with a soft brush and mild solution, following SOREL’s sneaker guidance (SOREL care guide).
- Air-dry fully at room temperature. Keep the shoes away from radiators, hair dryers, and strong sunlight. Nikwax warns that excessive heat can irreversibly damage leather and harm footwear adhesives; Lacoste also advises against direct heat and strong sunlight (Nikwax leather-footwear care; Lacoste shoe-care guidance).
If the shoes are thoroughly wet, remove the laces and insoles if possible, then loosely fill them with newspaper and replace it as it becomes wet. Nikwax recommends this approach, and Saucony also suggests newspaper stuffing while shoes air-dry (Nikwax leather-footwear care; Saucony care guide). Do not pack paper tightly enough to stretch the upper.

Choose treatments by material—not habit
Cleaning removes dirt; conditioner is intended for suitable leather that needs conditioning; water-repellent products add a treatment but do not make every sneaker waterproof. These are different purposes, so a product that suits one does not automatically suit another.
- Smooth leather: Nikwax describes conditioner as useful for smooth leather that is new or dried out, with use a few times a year or as needed (Nikwax leather-footwear care). Treat that as maker guidance, not a required schedule for every sneaker.
- Suede or nubuck: SOREL recommends a soft brush made for suede or nubuck. Do not apply smooth-leather conditioner directions to these materials without checking both the shoe maker’s guidance and the product label (SOREL care guide; OAO care guide).
- Water repellency: Lacoste recommends applying a suitable waterproofing spray before first wear in its general shoe-care guidance, but this does not establish that every spray suits every leather finish (Lacoste shoe-care guidance). Check the sneaker maker’s instructions and the treatment label first. Nikwax says to reapply appropriate water repellency as needed or after severe conditions and, for its footwear-care approach, allow treated footwear to dry for 24 hours before use; follow the instructions for the specific product you choose (Nikwax leather-footwear care).
A leather sneaker cleaner and a soft-bristle shoe brush are useful only when compatible with the upper’s finish. Conditioner, water-repellent treatment, shoe trees, and absorbent paper are optional aids—not a universal kit every pair needs.

Help shoes dry between wears and store them well
When practical, avoid wearing the same pair several days in a row. Lacoste recommends rotating shoes and storing them dry, away from sunlight and humidity (Lacoste shoe-care guidance). Give damp shoes time to air out before putting them away; clean paper can help absorb moisture during drying and support the shape (Saucony care guide).

Mistakes that can damage leather sneakers
- Using direct heat to speed drying: high heat can harm leather and footwear adhesives (Nikwax; Lacoste).
- Scrubbing or soaking the upper by default: the maker guidance here emphasizes brushing, damp cloths, and gentle dabbing rather than aggressive cleaning (SOREL; Lacoste).
- Assuming one conditioner or spray works on every finish: care and conditioner choice can vary between smooth leather, suede, nubuck, and mixed materials (OAO).
- Assuming water-repellent means waterproof: the cited guidance describes water-repellent treatment, not a universal guarantee that treated sneakers are waterproof (Nikwax; Lacoste).
