Start with the care label sewn into the garment: it takes precedence over general advice because fabric and decoration methods vary. If the label permits ordinary machine washing, a cautious routine is to turn the tee inside out, wash it in cold water on a gentle cycle with similar colors and mild detergent, then air dry or use low heat only if the label allows.
Check the care label first
Care symbols describe the maximum level of treatment a textile item can withstand without damage, according to GINETEX, the International Association for Textile Care Labelling. They cover washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional textile care. A gentler treatment or lower temperature is generally permitted, but a care label does not guarantee that every stain will come out.
Follow the garment’s own instructions even when a general print-care guide suggests something different. The label reflects the garment’s care-sensitive materials; a cotton shirt, a blend and a particular printed finish may not all respond alike.
A cautious wash routine for washable printed tees
- Turn the tee inside out. Custom Ink, Printful and Threadless recommend inside-out washing for their printed apparel. This is a common care recommendation, not a measured guarantee against wear.
- Use cold water and a gentle cycle, if the label permits. Wash with similar colors. Custom Ink suggests cold and gentle washing unless the item is heavily soiled; Printful specifies cold water and a gentle cycle for its DTG apparel.
- Choose mild detergent. Printful recommends mild detergent for its printed products. Avoid bleach and fabric softener as a cautious default where the product instructions advise against them; a decorated-apparel guide also advises avoiding both. Restrictions can vary with the print and garment, so check the product’s instructions.
- Dry according to the label. Air drying is a cautious option. Custom Ink and Printful also allow low-heat drying in their general guidance, but do not tumble dry if the label prohibits it. Threadless notes that cotton garments may shrink and suggests hanging or laying them flat to lessen shrinkage; no drying method guarantees that shrinkage will not occur.
- Keep direct heat off the printed design. Do not iron over the print. If ironing is allowed for the garment, Printful recommends a cool iron on the reverse side.
What changes with print type and fabric
These care recommendations are provider guidance, not a controlled comparison of how long different prints last. Use the maker’s instructions when available, especially for a shirt with a specific decoration process.

If the care label is missing
Look for the maker’s product page or care instructions first. If none are available and the tee appears washable, a conservative starting point is inside out, cold water, a gentle cycle, similar colors, mild detergent and air drying. This is general apparel-provider guidance, not a guarantee that every garment will tolerate the same treatment.

The cited providers recommend practices such as inside-out washing and lower-heat care, but they do not establish a universal wash count, lifespan or percentage improvement for printed tees. No single routine can promise that a print will not fade, crack or peel, or that a garment will not shrink. For a heavily soiled item, remember that gentler care may not remove every stain; GINETEX explicitly says care-label treatment does not guarantee all dirt and stains will be removed.
