Sapphire crystal resists everyday scratching better than mineral or acrylic watch glass, but it is not scratch-proof, impact-proof, or a guarantee that the watch is waterproof. Clean it gently with a soft, lint-free cloth; keep it away from grit and hard knocks; and follow the care and water-resistance instructions for your exact watch model.
What sapphire resists—and what it does not
Sapphire’s hardness helps it resist scratches, but it does not make the crystal invulnerable. Rado describes its sapphire crystal as having a hardness rating of 2,500 Vickers (year not stated on its page) and says materials at least as hard can scratch it. The brand specifically warns about nail files, granite, and sand, which can contain very hard particles. The Gemological Institute of America rates sapphire 9 on the Mohs hardness scale; that figure is not a measure of impact resistance. GIA’s sapphire care guide Likewise, a hard blow can chip or break a sapphire crystal even when ordinary rubbing would not scratch it. Shock can also affect the watch’s movement or seals.
Clean the crystal without risking the rest of the watch
- Start dry. Wipe the crystal and case with a clean, soft cloth; use a lint-free cloth if available. Swarovski recommends lint-free cloth for its watches, and other manufacturers also recommend soft-cloth drying. Swarovski watch-care guidance
- Check the model instructions before adding water. Confirm the watch’s water-resistance rating and manual, and make sure its crown and pushers are in the positions specified by the manufacturer. Water resistance differs by model and can be affected by the watch’s condition.
- Use soapy water only if the watch permits it. Some manufacturers allow it for water-resistant cases and certain metal or rubber bracelets, but that does not make it suitable for every watch, strap, or finish. - Dry gently. Use a soft cloth after any permitted cleaning. Do not wet leather or delicate straps unless their care instructions specifically allow it.
Prevent scratches, chemical damage, and impact
- Keep the crystal away from sand, nail files, granite, and other abrasive or very hard materials. A single loose grain can be more relevant than the apparent softness of the surface it came from.
- Avoid hard knocks, thermal shocks, and sudden extreme temperature changes. A crystal can chip or crack from impact even if its surface remains scratch-resistant.
- Keep the watch away from solvents, detergents, perfume, cosmetics, and similar chemicals. They may harm the case, strap, bracelet, or seals. CENTURY’s care guide and Maurice Lacroix’s 2022 product-care manual
- Do not operate the crown or pushers underwater unless the manufacturer explicitly says your model allows it. Sapphire describes the crystal material, not the water resistance of the assembled watch.
Do not mistake every mark for a scratch in the sapphire
A visible mark alone cannot establish whether the sapphire is scratched. It could be residue, damage to an anti-reflective treatment, or another kind of damage; Maurice Lacroix notes that anti-reflective treatment on sapphire can show marks from everyday wear. Swarovski also warns that impacts can damage crystals. Try gentle wiping, but if the mark remains—or there is a chip, crack, edge damage, or suspected coating damage—ask the brand or an authorized watchmaker to assess it rather than attempting a home repair.

Water resistance and when to seek service
Water resistance is a property of the watch’s seals and construction, not the sapphire crystal, and it can change as seals age or after shock or deformation. Follow the instructions for your model and do not infer that a watch is safe around water because it has sapphire glass. Seiko advises regular water-resistance checks; CENTURY recommends annual checks at an authorized service center. Those are brand-specific recommendations, not a universal interval. Rinse a watch after salt water or pool water only if its rating and manual allow that exposure and rinsing method. If the watch has taken a significant blow, has a chipped, cracked, or loose crystal, shows condensation, or has uncertain water resistance, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider promptly. Shock can affect water resistance even without obvious external damage.

Why abrasive DIY polishing is a poor default
Do not treat polishing paste or household abrasives as a standard fix for sapphire. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal DIY polishing method, and a mark may involve an anti-reflective coating rather than the crystal itself. Have a qualified repairer identify the problem and advise whether service or crystal replacement is appropriate.
