Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a small, bounded batch, a Cloud Run function can launch headless Chrome, capture pages with Puppeteer, and upload the images to Cloud Storage. For a large list, Google’s documented bulk pattern uses Cloud Run job tasks to divide URLs into independent work, with Workflows and Eventarc for orchestration—not a single function stretched across the whole batch. Google now calls its functions product Cloud Run functions; the older “Google Cloud Functions” wording remains familiar.
Choose the right Google Cloud execution model
Each screenshot requires browser startup, navigation, page rendering, image capture, and usually an upload. Those steps make screenshot work heavier and less predictable than a simple HTTP handler. Keep a function invocation bounded; for a substantial URL list, split the work into tasks that can run and fail independently.
Use a Cloud Run function for a small, bounded workload
A function suits a request- or event-triggered task that handles one URL or a small, controlled set. Pass a URL or work-item reference through the trigger, start the browser, capture the page, and upload the file. Return a compact status record rather than image bytes.
Use Cloud Run jobs for a large batch
Google’s documented screenshot example assigns URLs to Cloud Run job tasks, with each task selecting its URL by task index. Workflows and Eventarc can coordinate an event-driven batch. This is a Cloud Run jobs architecture, not a feature of Cloud Run functions; it is a better fit when many independent URLs need repeatable processing. See Google’s Cloud Run jobs, Workflows, and Eventarc screenshot example.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepare the browser and workload
Use headless Chrome with a browser automation library
Headless Chrome renders the page. Puppeteer is used in Google’s screenshot example and codelab; Google’s current browser automation guidance also names Playwright and the Chrome DevTools Protocol. See Browser automation in Cloud Run and the Cloud Run screenshot codelab.
Pin compatible browser and library versions in your runtime image, then validate the image after upgrades. Browser startup and rendering consume time and memory, so include them in capacity planning rather than estimating from network navigation alone.

Define what “ready” means
A page’s load event does not guarantee that its visible content is finished, especially when JavaScript renders or updates the page after navigation. Choose a readiness rule that matches your target pages: for example, wait for a known selector, a bounded delay, or an appropriate browser navigation condition. Set finite navigation and total-task timeouts. No single readiness condition is correct for every site.
Choose screenshot scope and output format
Decide whether each result should show the current viewport or the full page. Google’s codelab demonstrates full-page capture and Cloud Storage upload. Choose PNG or JPEG based on your downstream use, and use stable object names so retries do not create ambiguous results.

Build a bulk pipeline
- Store or receive a manifest. Keep the URL list and batch metadata outside the screenshot response. For job tasks, make task-to-URL assignment deterministic so a retry can identify the same work item.
- Divide the list into bounded tasks. Configure task count, parallelism, and task timeout for the chosen Cloud Run jobs setup. For function-based work, arrange per-URL or small-batch invocations through the caller or event system.
- Launch the browser and capture. Set a controlled viewport, navigate with a finite timeout, apply the readiness rule, and take the screenshot. Reuse a browser process only when the task lifecycle and isolation requirements make that appropriate.
- Upload each image to Cloud Storage. Do not send a large collection of image bytes back through an HTTP response. Return a small status record with the URL or work-item ID, object name, capture time, and outcome.
- Record failures per URL. Capture useful error details for redirects, TLS failures, blocked pages, timeouts, unusually long pages, and browser crashes. Retry transient errors selectively with a cap; do not let one bad URL erase the status of the rest of the batch.
- Make the batch auditable. Record enough metadata to match each source URL to its output and status, and ensure retries do not silently overwrite a valid image with an incomplete result.
Google’s example demonstrates the broad jobs-and-storage architecture, not a universal production-ready failure policy. Decide that policy based on the sites and outputs you need.
Check execution limits before sizing a batch
Cloud Run functions limits vary by generation and trigger type. Google’s current quota documentation lists maximum execution durations of 60 minutes for second-generation HTTP functions, 1,800 seconds for scheduled or task-queue functions, and 540 seconds for event-driven functions. The first-generation quota page lists a 540-second maximum duration and 8 GiB maximum memory. Check the live pages for the exact generation and trigger you will deploy; limits and available settings may differ. See Cloud Run functions quotas and first-generation quotas.

These are upper bounds, not recommended batch sizes. Estimate capacity by measuring representative pages in your target region and runtime, including browser startup, readiness waits, screenshot dimensions, and upload time. Then divide the manifest so each task has a safety margin beneath its deadline. Page complexity, network conditions, and rendering behavior vary too much to promise a fixed number of URLs per invocation without workload measurements.
Cloud Run function or Cloud Run job?
| Decision | Cloud Run function | Cloud Run job tasks |
|---|---|---|
| Work shape | Bounded request- or event-triggered invocation | Finite batch divided among tasks |
| Bulk distribution | Caller or event system arranges work | Tasks can map task indexes to URLs in Google’s example |
| Runtime planning | Check generation- and trigger-specific function quotas | Configure task count, parallelism, and timeout for the current service |
| Output handling | Upload images to object storage | Each task uploads its image to object storage |
| Coordination | HTTP or event trigger and downstream systems | Workflows and Eventarc in Google’s documented sample |
| Best fit | Small batches or per-item event handling | Large independent URL lists and repeatable batches |
Troubleshoot common failures
- The function times out: Browser startup, page readiness, or upload may exceed the configured deadline. Reduce work per invocation, use finite waits, measure representative pages, or use job tasks for a large batch. Confirm the quota for the function’s generation and trigger.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: Navigation may have completed before client-rendered content appeared, or the page may have failed to load its resources. Use a page-specific readiness condition and capture navigation or console errors in your status record.
- The browser fails to launch or crashes: Check that the deployed runtime image includes a compatible browser and automation library, and validate the image after version changes. Consider whether task memory is sufficient for the pages and screenshot dimensions.
- Some URLs fail while others succeed: Treat outcomes per URL. Record the failure, retry only plausibly transient cases with a limit, and let the rest of the batch complete.
- Images are missing or hard to match to URLs: Verify the Cloud Storage upload result and use deterministic object naming plus metadata that records the source URL and status.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, without you managing the browser runtime. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google provide a fixed number of URLs that one function can screenshot?
No fixed capacity is established. Measure representative pages in your runtime and region, then size tasks with time and memory headroom.
Can I use Playwright instead of Puppeteer?
Google’s current Cloud Run browser automation guidance names both Playwright and Puppeteer, while its screenshot example uses Puppeteer.
