A browser locale changes browser language signals and formatting behavior; it does not guarantee that a site will translate itself.
How do I take screenshots of a website in different languages?
Use one isolated browser context per language or region. Set the locale in the context, add any separate timezone or geolocation emulation the page requires, and then confirm the rendered page before capturing it. Playwright documents locale, timezone, geolocation, permissions, and viewport as browser context settings: Playwright configuration.
The examples below use Node.js with Playwright. Install it in your project with npm install -D playwright, and install the browser binary you intend to use with npx playwright install chromium. Run the script with node capture-locales.mjs. Confirm option names against the Playwright release installed in your project; the official documentation is not pinned here to a specific release.
Capture a page once for each locale
Save the following as capture-locales.mjs. Replace the example URL with the page being documented. The script creates a fresh context for each locale, uses the same viewport and screenshot settings, and saves one PNG per locale.

Playwright describes a full-page capture as a screenshot of the full scrollable page, as if the page fit on a very tall screen: Playwright screenshots. If the page never reaches network idle because it keeps making requests, use a different navigation wait condition and an explicit wait for the content you need instead.
Use the same context settings for a fair comparison
Locale should vary when language or regional formatting is the subject of comparison. Keep the other conditions consistent unless the documentation intentionally compares them too: viewport, browser, screenshot scale, output format, page state, and account or consent state. A different viewport or device scale can change wrapping and apparent dimensions independently of translation.
How do I change browser language for screenshots?
In Playwright, set locale when creating a browser context. Playwright documents that this affects navigator.language, the Accept-Language request header, and number and date formatting: browser and test configuration. Those signals are inputs to the site, not proof of its language selection.

Some sites need a locale-specific URL, an in-page language choice, a saved cookie, or an account preference as well. Apply that site-specific setup after navigation or initialize it in the context, and record what you did so someone can reproduce the capture. Check the visible text and relevant formats—not only navigator.language—before saving evidence.
Separate language from regional simulation
Language, timezone, and location are independent decisions. Add timezone or geolocation only when the page’s behavior or documentation requires them. For pages that read location, grant geolocation permission as well as setting coordinates. Playwright’s configuration documentation covers these context options at browser and test configuration.

});Use a timezone that matches the intended scenario and geolocation coordinates appropriate to the page. A language-region tag such as de-DE does not itself set either one.

Choose viewport, full-page, or element capture
The right framing depends on what the documentation needs to show. Playwright supports a viewport screenshot by default, full-page capture, and screenshots of a locator: screenshots documentation.

Capture only a relevant component

Choose output format and scale
Playwright screenshot APIs accept a path or can return image bytes for later processing. The screenshot CLI documentation lists PNG, JPEG, and WebP formats and the css and device scale choices: Playwright test CLI. Use the same format and scale across language variants. Device scale captures device pixels rather than CSS pixels, so the pixel dimensions can differ from a CSS-scale capture.

Prepare isolated, repeatable runs
A fresh browser context per locale prevents cookies and other session state from one variant from silently affecting another. Playwright describes contexts as independent sessions and documents locale scenarios in its isolation guide: Browser contexts.
Handle authenticated pages safely
If the page requires sign-in, initialize each context with a prepared storage state rather than signing in manually during every run. Playwright documents storage state for setting up contexts with logged-in information: Authentication. Treat the resulting screenshots and state files as sensitive: confirm that captured account details are suitable for publication, and do not commit credentials or private session data to a public repository.
Keep a capture record
Use filenames that identify the page, locale, and framing, such as checkout-de-DE-desktop.png. Alongside the image, record the URL, locale, viewport, browser, capture date, and any relevant consent, language-switcher, or account state. This is a practical documentation convention, not a Playwright requirement; it makes later regeneration and comparison more reliable.

Troubleshooting localized screenshots
- The screenshot is still in the original language. The site may rely on a locale-specific URL, language switcher, cookie, or account setting rather than browser locale alone. Apply the site’s language-selection flow and verify visible text before capturing.
- The date or number format did not change. Confirm the context’s locale and inspect the rendered page. If the format depends on a site preference or server-side account setting, configure that separately; browser locale only provides browser signals and formatting behavior.
- Location-dependent content is wrong or absent. Configure geolocation and grant the
geolocationpermission if the page reads location. Set timezone separately when time-sensitive content matters. - A run appears to inherit another language’s state. Create a new context for each variant instead of reusing a page or context with existing cookies or preferences.

Navigate with a suitable alternative wait condition, then wait for a specific heading, selector, or other content that signals the page is ready.- The full-page image is unwieldy. Capture the viewport or the relevant locator instead if the documentation concerns only the visible state or one component.
- The screenshot differs between reruns. Check that viewport, browser version, scale, format, account state, consent state, and page readiness are consistent. Record the browser and configuration so the image can be regenerated after site or browser changes.
