Google Sheets cannot turn a webpage URL into a visual screenshot with IMAGE() or IMPORTHTML(). For a one-off, capture the page elsewhere and insert the image; for repeatable captures, use Apps Script to call a browser-based screenshot API and place the returned image in the sheet.

Choose the right way to put a website screenshot in Sheets

Route Best for What goes into the sheet Setup
Insert an image manually A one-off screenshot The captured image Low
IMAGE() Displaying an image that already has a usable URL A reference to a hosted image Low
Apps Script plus a browser-based screenshot API Capturing one or many webpage URLs repeatedly Image bytes or a URL, depending on the implementation Higher: script, service, and authorization

The key distinction is that a webpage URL identifies HTML content, not a screenshot file. A screenshot requires a renderer that loads the page as a browser would. Google Sheets’ image functions and Apps Script’s HTTP request function do not themselves render a webpage.

Can I take a screenshot of a website from its URL in Google Sheets?

Not with a formula alone. Google documents IMAGE() as a way to display an image from a URL, not to render a webpage URL as an image. Google’s IMAGE function documentation also notes that Google Drive-hosted URLs and SVG files are unsupported, and a volatile function cannot be used directly or indirectly as the image’s base URL.

IMPORTHTML() is for extracting a table or list from an HTML page, not for producing a visual snapshot. Google’s IMPORTHTML documentation describes that content-import purpose.

Insert a screenshot you already captured

For occasional use, take a screenshot with your browser or operating system, then add it in Sheets using Insert > Image. Google Sheets provides options to insert an image in a cell or over the cells, and its image-selection flow also includes taking a screenshot. See Google’s instructions for inserting or deleting images and drawings.

  • Choose an image in a cell when it should be part of the grid layout. The cell cannot also contain text.
  • Choose an image over the cells when you need to keep cell text in place or want to position the screenshot independently of a single cell.

Display a hosted image with IMAGE()

If a screenshot has already been captured and hosted at a direct image URL that Sheets can access, enter a formula such as =IMAGE(A2), where A2 contains that URL. The URL must identify an image, not the source webpage.

The function accepts a mode argument: =IMAGE(url, mode). Google documents four modes:

  • 1: fit the image inside the cell while preserving its aspect ratio.
  • 2: stretch the image to fill the cell, which can distort it.
  • 3: display the image at its original size.
  • 4: specify custom dimensions with =IMAGE(url, 4, height, width).

These modes affect how the image is displayed; they do not automatically resize the row or column. Adjust cell dimensions yourself if needed. The first use or edit of an image or other import function may require you to approve external access. Google’s function-access help explains this prompt.

Automate website screenshots with Apps Script

For repeatable captures, the workflow is: read a webpage URL, send it to a browser-based screenshot service, then insert the returned image into the spreadsheet or use a returned image URL with IMAGE(). Apps Script’s UrlFetchApp makes HTTP and HTTPS requests; it does not execute a browser renderer. Google describes the request mechanism in its UrlFetchApp reference and recommends Apps Script for custom ingestion functions in its custom functions guide.

Set up the script and permissions

  1. In the spreadsheet, open Extensions > Apps Script.
  2. Add a function that sends the target page URL and your screenshot-service credentials to that provider’s documented screenshot endpoint. The exact request parameters, response format, and authentication depend on the chosen provider.
  3. Ensure the script has the https://www.googleapis.com/auth/script.external_request scope. Apps Script may request authorization when you run it for the first time.
  4. Handle the service response according to its documentation: it may return image bytes or a hosted image URL. Insert bytes into the sheet using an image-insertion method, or display a stable, accessible image URL with IMAGE().

Google documents the HTTP-fetch building block, but not a built-in webpage-screenshot API or a standard provider response format. A third-party tutorial describes this general implementation pattern: iTechGuides’ website screenshot in Google Sheets tutorial. Provider-specific compatibility and terms should be checked with the provider.

Apps Script example using ScreenshotNeo

ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot from a GET request to its API. Its documentation is at ScreenshotNeo API documentation. The following Apps Script function fetches a screenshot as a blob and inserts it over the sheet grid. Replace the example page URL with the page you want to capture, and store the API key in Script Properties rather than in a visible spreadsheet cell.

function captureWebsiteScreenshot() {
  const apiKey = PropertiesService.getScriptProperties()
    .getProperty('SCREENSHOTNEO_API_KEY');
  if (!apiKey) throw new Error('Set SCREENSHOTNEO_API_KEY in Script Properties.');

  const pageUrl = 'https://stripe.com';
  const endpoint = 'https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot';
  const query = [
    'access_key=' + encodeURIComponent(apiKey),
    'url=' + encodeURIComponent(pageUrl)
  ].join('&');

  const response = UrlFetchApp.fetch(endpoint + '?' + query, {
    muteHttpExceptions: true
  });
  const status = response.getResponseCode();
  if (status < 200 || status >= 300) {
    throw new Error('Screenshot request failed with HTTP ' + status + ': ' +
      response.getContentText());
  }

  const blob = response.getBlob().setName('website-screenshot.png');
  const sheet = SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSheet();
  sheet.insertImage(blob, 1, 1);
}

Before running the function, add the key in Apps Script under Project Settings > Script Properties as SCREENSHOTNEO_API_KEY. Apps Script can also be configured with an explicit manifest scope for external requests; Google lists https://www.googleapis.com/auth/script.external_request as the required scope for UrlFetchApp. Actual authorization prompts depend on the script’s permissions and setup.

Capture a list of URLs

To process a column of URLs, read the values from a range, call the screenshot endpoint once for each non-empty URL, and insert each resulting blob at the appropriate row and column. For a large list, avoid a single unbounded run: account for Apps Script execution limits and the screenshot provider’s usage limits, and consider processing a manageable batch at a time. Protect the sheet from duplicate runs if captures are expensive or update existing images. Exact limits depend on the Apps Script environment and provider and should be checked in their current documentation.

Or skip the browser setup

Instead of building and maintaining the browser-rendering request yourself, call ScreenshotNeo’s screenshot endpoint. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; responses include page-verdict and billing headers. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Troubleshooting and reliability

The formula shows an error or no image

  • Confirm that the cell contains a direct image URL, not a webpage URL. A page URL needs a browser-based screenshot renderer first.
  • Check that the image URL is reachable by Sheets and points to a supported image format. Google documents that Drive URLs and SVG are not supported by IMAGE().
  • If prompted, approve external access for the formula or import function.
  • If an image appears at the wrong size, adjust the mode and the row or column dimensions. The formula does not resize cells.

The script fails to fetch or insert an image

  • Authorization or scope error: approve the script’s requested permissions and confirm it includes https://www.googleapis.com/auth/script.external_request.
  • HTTP error from the screenshot service: inspect the status and response body; verify the key, endpoint, request parameters, and provider-specific usage or access limits.
  • Screenshot is blank or incomplete: the renderer may be unable to load the page as requested. JavaScript-driven content, login-gated pages, and anti-bot controls depend on renderer capabilities and permitted access.
  • Works outside Sheets but not from Apps Script: Apps Script requests originate from Google’s network infrastructure, which uses a set pool of source IP addresses. A destination that restricts caller IPs may need to allow that traffic.
  • Slow or repeated captures: each request adds a network round trip and rendering time. Process batches, record successful results, and avoid recapturing unchanged URLs unnecessarily.

Google documents import traffic limits, administrator restrictions on URL imports, and limits for large import results. Those warnings apply to formula-based import functions; they should not be treated as documented screenshot-rendering limits for every Apps Script request.

Choose a screenshot service carefully

A screenshot API adds an external account and service dependency to the spreadsheet. Before relying on one for routine or sensitive work, check its current rendering options, support for full-page versus viewport captures, authentication needs, request and usage limits, data retention and privacy terms, and whether any returned image URL remains stable and accessible to Sheets. A successful HTTP request alone does not establish that a provider can capture every page or that the result is suitable for your use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does IMPORTHTML take a screenshot of a webpage?

No. It imports a table or list from HTML; it does not create a visual screenshot.

Can I put a screenshot and text in the same cell?

No. An image inserted in a cell occupies that cell. Insert the image over the cells if the underlying cell text needs to remain.
