To capture a page behind login in Percy, first put your browser test in the required authenticated state. If Percy’s asset discovery also needs access to protected resources, pass the required request headers in the snapshot call or set them globally in .percy.yml. Percy documents both approaches; its authentication example is specifically for Cypress.
How Percy handles authentication for snapshots
Percy’s changelog documents using the network request headers required by a protected site. This is distinct from signing your test run into a Percy project: the application’s authentication grants access to protected content, while the Percy project token associates uploaded snapshots with a project. Percy describes the project-token workflow in its Cypress visual testing guide.
The authenticated browser state and Percy’s asset-discovery requests are related but separate parts of the workflow. Navigate the test to the page and state you want to capture. If the page’s protected assets need credentials during Percy’s discovery, configure the required request headers as shown below. Percy’s documentation does not establish that these examples cover every authentication scheme or SDK.
Option 1: Set headers for one Cypress snapshot
Pass requestHeaders in the snapshot options when only a particular capture needs the headers:

Option 2: Configure headers globally
To apply headers through the shared Percy configuration, Percy’s changelog shows this .percy.yml structure:

Use the required value for your environment rather than the example credential. The documented per-snapshot and global spellings differ: the Cypress option is requestHeaders, while the YAML key is request-headers. The changelog does not specify precedence if both are configured.

Percy’s official authentication entry, dated October 8, 2019, says this capability requires @percy/agent v0.18.0 or newer and suggests checking the installed package with npm ls @percy/agent. Treat that as the historical minimum stated by the entry, not as a current version recommendation.

Verify the capture workflow
- Run the browser test so it reaches the authenticated page state you intend to compare.
- If Percy must fetch protected assets, add the required request headers to that snapshot or to the global asset-discovery configuration.
- Run the Percy snapshot flow and inspect the resulting snapshot in Percy. The project token connects the upload to a Percy project; it is not a substitute for the application’s authentication headers.
Troubleshooting
The page or its assets still appear unauthenticated
Check that the test has reached the desired logged-in page state and that the configured headers match what the protected server requires. The documented examples describe request headers for protected content; they do not establish support for every authentication scheme.
The installed agent version is unclear
Run npm ls @percy/agent to inspect the installed version. Percy’s 2019 changelog names v0.18.0 as the minimum for this feature; consult current official package documentation for present-day compatibility guidance.

The Percy project receives no associated snapshot
Check the Cypress project-token setup separately from application authentication. Percy’s Cypress guide covers the token used to associate test uploads with a project; the authentication changelog covers headers used to access protected site content.
