To capture a whole page in Playwright, navigate to it and set fullPage: true in page.screenshot():

The Playwright Page API describes fullPage as taking a screenshot of the full scrollable page instead of the currently visible viewport.
Capture a full page and save it
Here is a complete Node.js example using Playwright’s asynchronous API. Install Playwright in your project and install the browser it will use before running the script.

})();Replace the URL with the page you want to capture. Playwright’s Screenshots guide shows the same navigation-then-capture workflow. The screenshot type is inferred from the filename extension when you provide path.

Choose the right capture scope and output
Whole page, viewport, or one element
- Whole page: set
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable page. - Viewport: omit
fullPageor set it tofalseto capture only what is currently visible. - One element: use a locator screenshot when you need a specific component rather than the whole document:

If the element itself scrolls, only the content currently scrolled into view is captured. Playwright recommends locator-based screenshots rather than elementHandle.screenshot(); see the ElementHandle API.
Save a file or keep the image bytes
With path, Playwright writes the image to disk. Without it, page.screenshot() returns a buffer, which you can pass to image-processing or comparison code:

Options that change the screenshot
Use options deliberately: they can affect dimensions, file format, transparency, and whether the captured state is stable enough for a test. Check the current Page API for the full option signatures supported by your installed Playwright version.

Handle pages that load content as you scroll
fullPage: true requests a screenshot of the full scrollable page, but the API documentation does not promise that it will scroll through the page to trigger every site’s lazy-loading behavior. Infinite feeds, images loaded near the viewport, and other application-specific content may therefore need an explicit loading workflow before capture.
For a dynamic page, determine how that page reveals more content, wait for the relevant items or images to load, and inspect the resulting screenshot. There is no universal scrolling sequence: a site may load on scroll, on a button click, or in another way. Do not assume a full-page capture alone has activated all of its loading logic.

Use screenshot assertions for visual tests
For a one-off image, save a screenshot or keep its buffer. For a visual regression test with Playwright Test, use its screenshot assertion instead:
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();The assertion waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match, then compares the last screenshot with the stored expectation. Rendering can vary across operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Run tests in a consistent environment and review intentional baseline changes. Troubleshooting
- The screenshot shows only the visible screen: Set
fullPage: true. Without it, the screenshot defaults to the viewport. - The file is missing or has an unexpected type: Confirm the
pathis writable and ends with the image extension you want; Playwright infers the image type from that extension. - Content below the fold is missing: Check whether the page loads it only after scrolling, interaction, or another site-specific event. Make that loading behavior explicit and inspect the result; full-page capture does not promise to trigger every lazy loader.
- An element screenshot omits part of a scrollable panel: Locator screenshots capture the element’s current scrolled content, not all content hidden inside its own scroll area.
- Visual snapshots differ between machines: Keep the operating system, browser version, settings, and test conditions consistent, then review changes rather than treating every rendering difference as an application regression.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does fullPage: true scroll the page to load lazy images?
The documented behavior is full scrollable-page capture; it does not guarantee that every site’s lazy-loading behavior is triggered. Handle and verify site-specific loading before the screenshot.
