With Playwright MCP, set a narrow browser viewport, navigate to the page, then call browser_take_screenshot. Use explicit width and height when you are checking a responsive breakpoint; use a device profile when you also want mobile-device emulation. A regular capture shows the current viewport, while fullPage: true captures the full scrollable page.
Choose viewport sizing or mobile emulation
These settings answer different questions. An explicit viewport lets you control the CSS width and height directly, which is useful for checking how a page responds at a particular breakpoint. A device profile represents a named device and can emulate more than just screen dimensions.
Set an explicit viewport
Start the Playwright MCP server with --viewport-size=<width>x<height>, or resize an open page with the browser_resize tool. For example, browser_resize with {"width":375,"height":812} is a documented interaction example—not a universal mobile standard. Choose dimensions that match the breakpoint or layout you want to inspect.

Use a device profile when needed
The configuration supports a named device with --device="iPhone 15" and a generic --mobile mode. The current documentation says generic mobile uses Pixel 10 on Chromium or iPhone 17 on WebKit, so its profile varies with the browser engine. Generic --mobile cannot be combined with --device. Choose explicit dimensions instead when width itself is the test variable.
These options describe the browser setup; they do not guarantee that a particular site will render correctly at every chosen size.
Capture the page or a specific element
- Start Playwright MCP with the viewport or device option that fits your test.
- Navigate to the website and wait until it reaches the state you want to inspect.
- Call
browser_take_screenshot. LeavetargetandfullPageunset to capture the visible viewport. SetfullPage: truefor the full scrollable page, or settargetto an element reference or selector to capture one element. - Choose a format and output scale if the defaults do not suit your needs.
The screenshot documentation says fullPage cannot be combined with target. A full-page capture and an element-only capture are separate choices.

Set the image format, filename, and scale
- Format: PNG, JPEG, and WebP are supported. If you omit
type, Playwright MCP infers it from the filename extension or defaults to PNG. - Filename: Set
filenamewhen you want to name the saved screenshot. If omitted, the screenshot is returned inline and a default filename is used in the output directory. - Scale:
scale: "css"is the default and produces an image sized in CSS pixels.scale: "device"uses device pixels, producing a higher-resolution image based on the device pixel ratio.
Use CSS-pixel scaling to inspect the layout at its CSS dimensions; use device-pixel scaling when a higher-resolution output is useful. The available options are detailed in the screenshot reference.
Use accessibility snapshots to inspect structure and interact
A screenshot is for visual review, including layout, charts, and canvas content. It is not the documented way to identify elements for interaction. Playwright MCP directs users to browser_snapshot for element references and interaction; accessibility snapshots expose page structure, and optional bounding boxes are viewport-relative and measured in CSS pixels.

Troubleshooting
The screenshot is desktop-sized or uses the wrong width
Check that the viewport was set for the browser session you are actually using. For a specific responsive breakpoint, use explicit dimensions rather than relying on a generic mobile profile, whose documented device differs between Chromium and WebKit.
The capture includes only the visible portion of the page
That is the default viewport capture. Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page, and do not set target at the same time.

Use browser_snapshot to inspect the page’s accessibility structure and obtain references for interaction. A screenshot is for viewing, not for locating actionable element references.

The output format or resolution is unexpected
Set type explicitly if you need a specific format, or use a matching filename extension so the type can be inferred. Set scale to "css" for CSS-pixel dimensions or "device" for device-pixel resolution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 375 × 812 the standard mobile screenshot size?
No. It is an example in Playwright MCP’s interaction guide, not a universal or recommended viewport for every mobile test.
Does a mobile-width screenshot prove a page works on a real phone?
No. It shows the browser rendering at the configured viewport or device profile. The documentation does not claim that a chosen setup guarantees correct rendering on every website or physical device.
