In Firefox, open the archived webcam page, let the replay finish rendering, then right-click an empty area and choose Take Screenshot (or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS). Choose Save full page to capture beyond the visible window. The image documents what Firefox rendered at that moment—not necessarily playable webcam footage or a complete copy of the archived site.
Capture the archived page in Firefox
- Open the archive replay URL for the webcam page. Wait for the content available in the replay to render. If the player is blank, shows an error, or reports that video is unavailable, capture that state as shown; a screenshot of a player shell is not footage.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot. Alternatively, press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Select Save full page in the screenshot interface. Mozilla’s instruction is: “Select Save full page in the upper right corner.” Choose Save visible only when you want the current viewport rather than the page beyond it. Firefox saves the image in its default download folder with a name based on the capture date and time and page title. Mozilla Support: Take screenshots in Firefox.
- Open the downloaded image to verify that the relevant page sections and displayed date or time are legible. Record any missing or nonfunctional content alongside it.
Use Firefox Developer Tools if the screenshot interface is unsuitable
Firefox Developer Tools offers another browser-native route. Enable its full-page screenshot button, or use the Web Console screenshot command with the --fullpage option. The resulting image is saved in the browser’s Downloads directory. Follow Mozilla’s current Developer Tools instructions for enabling the button and using the console command: Mozilla Developer Tools documentation.
Keep a useful record with the screenshot
Save a short note with the image so someone reviewing it can distinguish the archived page’s dates from the date you made the screenshot. This is practical documentation advice, not a universal evidentiary standard.
- Original page URL, if known, and the archive replay URL.
- Capture date and time displayed by the archive, if present.
- Your screenshot date and time, including time zone when known.
- Browser and version.
- What was missing or not working, such as a blank player, unavailable video, or an error.
What the screenshot documents—and what it cannot
A full-page screenshot is an image of the rendered browser state. It can show layout, text, archive notices, displayed timestamps, and whether a player or error message appeared. It does not preserve the underlying archived resources, guarantee that below-the-fold content loaded, or retain working interactions. The Library of Congress describes web archives as captured web content held in formats such as WARC or ARC; an image is not a substitute for that preservation package. Archived webcam pages may replay only a player shell. The Library of Congress notes that some streamed content served through third-party applications, interactive or dynamically rendered data, and subscription-protected content may not be collected. The Internet Archive also cautions that archived pages may lack functionality that depends on forms, JavaScript, or interaction with the originating host. If the goal is later replay or preservation of the web resource, use an appropriate web-archiving workflow as well as a screenshot. The Library of Congress notes that a webpage consists of multiple files and that its recommendations cannot guarantee a high-quality capture or flawless preservation. Troubleshooting
- The screenshot contains only the visible area. Choose Save full page, not Save visible. If the normal interface is unsuitable, use Firefox Developer Tools’ full-page capture option.
- The webcam video is blank or unavailable. The archive may not contain or replay streamed or externally dependent video. Capture the state you can see and identify it in your note; do not label the image as preserved footage.
- Some page content is missing. Wait for the replay to render before capturing, then inspect the saved image. Dynamically rendered, interactive, or externally hosted material may not be available in the archive.
- You cannot find the downloaded image. Check Firefox’s default download folder; Developer Tools captures also go to the browser’s Downloads directory.
