You can cancel a requested Uber trip in the app. Before you confirm, check the fee shown on screen: whether a fee applies—and how much it is—depends on your location, ride option, and trip timing. Uber’s local rules can change, so a particular number of minutes is not a universal free-cancellation window.
How to cancel an Uber ride

When is a cancellation fee charged?
Uber identifies two common situations: you cancel after a driver accepts or matches with your request, or the driver cancels after waiting at the pickup point. There is no single grace period that applies everywhere. For example, Uber’s UK guidance gives three minutes after acceptance for products other than Bike, Parcel, and Intercity, and five minutes for those named products. The same UK page says a driver cancellation after at least five minutes of waiting at pickup may incur a fee. These are UK-specific examples, not global thresholds. Uber’s fee guidance also describes other wait thresholds by ride category, including Share, UberX/XL, Comfort/Premier, and Black. Those thresholds belong to that page’s market context and should not be assumed to apply to your trip. The fee can also reflect factors such as distance already driven, the driver’s time to reach pickup, and waiting time; Uber says it may periodically experiment with policy changes. What if the driver is late or not moving?
A delayed driver or one who has not progressed toward pickup may qualify for a fee waiver under Uber’s guidance. One Uber Help page says a fee will not apply if Uber detects that the driver has made no progress toward pickup or is at least five minutes late. That threshold is specific to the cited guidance, so check the trip details and local Help page rather than treating it as a universal rule. How to review a cancellation fee
If a fee seems wrong, use the Review my cancellation fee option or the refund flow in Uber Help. Uber lists examples that can warrant review, such as a driver canceling instead of ending the ride, or canceling while too far from pickup. An amount shown after cancellation may be a temporary authorization hold for the trip’s upfront price rather than a final charge. Uber says it voids this hold immediately, but your bank may take a few business days to show the reversal.
